Radford Splits Doubleheader with High Point Despite Surging Offense

RADFORD, Va. – The Highlanders totaled 22 hits across the two games in their doubleheader against High Point Friday afternoon, winning the first game but dropping the second despite a ninth-inning rally that brought the winning run to first base.

Game 1
After falling behind 3-2, the Highlander offense came through with eight unanswered runs to take an 11-3 series opening victory.

David Bryant hit a two-run home run to right field and gave Radford a 2-0 lead in the first inning. The Panthers then scratched across a run in the second, fourth and fifth to take a 3-2 lead.

Jalen Buster scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth inning and that ignited a seven-run inning. Sean Cheely and Anthony Galati hit RBI singles with a two-run single by Straton Podaras in between. The string of hits created a 7-3 edge in favor of the Highlanders.

Dac Archer and Jalen Buster finished the inning off with a pair of RBIs each. Radford added a run in the sixth and eighth innings. The first came from Garret Matheny by way of a solo home run and the second came from Bryant. It was his third RBI of the game.

From there the Highlanders were able to coast to victory thanks to seven strong innings of three-run ball from Greg Duncan. The Highlanders finished with 11 runs in the game, coming up just short of the 16 they scored in their previous game at Longwood.

Game 2
Despite a slow start, the Highlanders continued to put runners on in the second game of the doubleheader. Ryan Bywaters was looking strong through five innings only giving up a trio of runs, but the Panthers touched him up for four more forcing an exit with two outs in the sixth and gave the Panthers a 7-1 lead they wouldn't relinquish.

Radford did not go quietly, however. In the bottom of the sixth Will Harless doubled down the left field line to score two runs and cut the deficit by a third. Bryant hit his second home run of the day to make it just a 7-4 ballgame in the eighth setting up a comeback attempt for the final frame.

Anthony Galati got the action started by smoking a double to centerfield that the centerfielder almost made a spectacular play on. A walk and a single loaded the bases, and the Highlanders were poised to strike. Back-to-back strikeouts stalled the rally, though, but a two-out walk by Bryant brought the Highlanders within two.

High Point was able to get the third out and put the game away. Landon Higgerson and Derek Domecq came into relief for the final three and a thirds innings keeping the Panthers quiet and to no runs.

Overall, on the day Bryant had the best day offensively knocking in five runs off of three hits and two home runs. Garrett Matheny also had a big day with four hits and a home run of his own. Cheely and Buster were the other two Highlanders to record three or more hits on the day. The Highlanders as a team also stole three bases in the second game.
