CHARLOTTE, N.C. – After scoring an absolute golazo in the Radford Men's Soccer game at ETSU on Saturday,
Yoshiya Okawa has been named Big South Freshman of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday afternoon.
A newcomer to the program, Okawa has quickly become a revelation for the Highlanders. The Tokyo, Japan native has scored two goals in as many games to begin his collegiate career and has been extremely efficient, putting six of his eight shot attempts on target.
In Saturday's road contest, Okawa earned his first career start and played solidly for 85 minutes. He rewarded his coaches' trust in him by scoring from well outside the 18-yard box on a left-footed strike that pulled Radford within one in the 70
th minute.
The freshman also scored in his collegiate debut, hitting the back of the net in the 32
nd minute of Radford's 9-0 rout of Concord on Aug. 27.
He'll try to keep that momentum going when the Highlanders host Liberty at Cupp Stadium this Saturday, Sept. 11 at 6 p.m. The game is open to the public and free of admission, but will also be streamed live on ESPN+.
