FARMVILLE, Va. — On the strength of two first-half goals from
Jared Dubose and
Griffin Gyurci, along with another stellar performance from goalkeeper
Joseba Incera, the Radford men's soccer team took down Longwood 2-1 in come-from-behind fashion on Wednesday evening at the Longwood Athletics Complex.
With the win, the Highlanders have now won three straight games for the first time since 2018, and have won consecutive road matches for the first time since October of last season.
"This was another gutsy road win by the Highlanders," said Radford head coach
Chris Barrett. "I was really proud of how we responded after going down early. These guys have come together at the right time and are playing so hard for each other right now. Our guys are so excited to play and are taking on every challenge presented to us. There is still a lot that can happen in the conference in terms of standings, but we are riding on a lot of positive energy and momentum and we look forward to hosting Campbell on Saturday"
Longwood (1-7-3, 0-3-0 Big South) struck first with an early goal from Marco Magnoli in the 5th minute. However, the visitors did not take long to respond. In the 17th minute, Dubose dribbled the ball into the penalty area from the left side of the net and, from near zero angle, chipped it past Lancers' keeper Alexandre Durand to even the score. It was Dubose's team-leading fourth goal of the season, and his third in the last three matches.
Radford (4-7-1, 3-2-0 Big South) kept up a relentless pressure throughout the half. In a wild sequence in the 36th minute, the Highlanders attempted a cross which was kicked away by Durant. The ball went to Gyurci at the top of the 18-yard. Gyurci got off a shot, and it was deflected by a charging Durant who came out to take away the angle. But the Apple Valley, Minn. native stuck with the play, securing the high rebound through two Longwood defenders and depositing the ball into the back left corner of the net to give Radford a 2-1 lead.
The Highlanders held on from there, playing a defensive-minded second half. The Lancers got off nine shots in the final 45 minutes, but none crossed the goal line, as Incera made seven saves on the evening.
Longwood out-shot Radford 18-15, including a narrow 8-7 advantage in shots on goal. It was the second straight victory for Radford this season when being out-shot, having defeated USC Upstate in similar fashion on Saturday.
Lancers' forward Ethan Stevenson had a game-high six shots, including three on net. Midfielder
Patrick Figaro paced the Highlanders with four shots, while
Samuel Schwarz chipped in with three.
