POWELLS POINT, N.C. – It was an incredible bounce back performance for the Radford men's golf team on Tuesday, shooting up the standings in the second round of the 2022 ODU/OBX Intercollegiate.
Entering the day tied for 14
th out of 16 teams due to a subpar showing on Sunday, the Highlanders more than righted the ship on their second trip through the Kilmarlic Golf Club course.
The Radford men shot a combined 278, a full 33 strokes better than yesterday's 311. The spectacular effort was enough the move the team up into 7
th place, just six strokes out of a top-5 spot.
Veterans
Patrick Gareiss and
Nicholas Taliaferro were the primary catalysts behind the big push, with each golfer shooting a 5-under par 66 on the day.
Gareiss was practically perfect, notching five birdies without a single bogey this time out. With a 75-66 through two rounds, the Chesapeake, Va. product sits at -1 and tied for 5
th in a field of 83 competitors.
Taliaferro absolutely flew up the individual leaderboard, going from T-73
rd yesterday to T-28
th by the end of the day today. The fifth-year student carded four birdies, one bogey, and an impeccable eagle on the 16
th hole.
With three birdies,
Nathan Piatt had a solid day at 3-over par, and is now tied for 53
rd. Although he shot +1 in the second round thanks to four more birdies,
Bryce Corbett is now tied for 70
th in the tournament.
Rounding out the group is
Bobby Dudeck, who is in 74
th after an less-than-ideal day that was at least highlighted by a pair of birdies.
Radford is tied for 3
rd on Par 4's with a stroke average of 4.22, but tied for last on Par 5's with an average of 5.32 strokes.
