Highlanders Take Down Panthers, Seal Third Seed in Big South Tournament

RADFORD, VA. – The Radford women's soccer program used a lone penalty kick goal by Alexeis Kirnos to defeat High Point Wednesday night 1-0.

The match got off to a quiet start offensively for the Highlanders, but a consistent Panther attack kept the defense on their toes. High Point would fire off six shots before Radford got their first. That first shot, however, would prove to be all the Highlanders needed.

Kat Parris got space in the box and looked to wind up to try and give Radford the lead in the 33rd minute. A costly foul by High Point on Parris kept her from scoring but allowed Alexeis Kirnos to step in for her third penalty kick attempt of the season. Kirnos did not miss, remaining perfect on the season in penalty kicks, and gave Radford the 1-0 advantage.

That advantage held until halftime where Radford regrouped and mounted a consistent attack on the Panthers. After being outshot 6-1 in the first half, Radford flipped the script and out-shot High Point by a whopping 10-2 margin in the second half. Radford had multiple attempts to double their lead, but a few great saves and team defensive effort by High Point kept the match close.

In the 57th minute, High Point had their best opportunity to net a game-tying goal that came off a Radford miscue. Goalkeeper Jordan Phillips rebounded quickly from said miscue, regrouping herself and then making an incredible save off an open shot by High Point to keep the Radford lead intact. That lead would remain intact the rest of the way for Radford, the tenth victory on the season for the Highlanders.

Now with back-to-back 10-win seasons in the books for the Highlanders, the team will bring a 6-2-1 Big South record into the Big South tournament which tied the team for second place in the Big South standings with USC Upstate. Due to tiebreakers, USC Upstate will earn the two seed while Radford will compete as the three seed in next week's Big South tournament.

"I thought we played well tonight," commented head coach Ben Sohrabi. "When we did the things we are good at it created a lot of chances for success. I'm really happy with finishing the season with a win. High Point is a very good team, they were the conference champions last season so to get a win against them is special. I'm proud of this team for what they've done at the end of the regular season."

Radford will have a week to prepare before heading to Matthews, N.C. for the semifinals of the Big South tournament. Radford and USC Upstate will face off in a rematch of an earlier meeting this season where the Trojans won 2-0 on the Highlanders' home turf. The game is currently set to kick off at 7 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.
