Women’s Basketball Hits Road for Hampton

RADFORD, Va. – The Big South regular season is in its final week and the Radford women's basketball program has three games left before heading to Charlotte for the Conference Tournament. The Highlanders begin their week with a visit to Hampton on Tuesday.

SERIES HISTORY
Radford and Hampton have met 19 times with the first meeting dating all the way back to 1979. Hampton recently became members of the Big South, although is leaving for the Colonial this summer. Since joining the Big South Hampton owns the series edge by a slim 4-3 margin. When these two Commonwealth rivals meet up it's an almost guarantee for a high-intensity game.
Last season both of the meetings between the two squads came at Hampton. Radford took the second meeting by a score of 53-42 where Rachel LaLonde pulled down 10 rebounds and Kyanna Morgan went a perfect six for six from the free throw line.
SCOUTING THE LADY PIRATES
Hampton has fallen into a rut over their last three games as they are in the middle of a three-game losing streak. The team played back-to-back games this past weekend on Saturday and Sunday facing North Carolina A&T and Longwood. Nylah Young continues to be the team's best offensive weapon night in and night out as she averages 15.7 points and 7.1 rebounds per game.
BIRKHEAD CONTINUES TO HIT FROM DEEP
Bridget Birkhead continues to be Radford's premier threat from deep this season. Birkhead leads the team in three-pointers made with 56 so far, which also ranks top-five in the Big South. Birkhead is on a streak of four-straight games with 10 or more points totaling 57 over that span. Rebounds aren't particularly what Birkhead is known for, but she has also grabbed a team-best total in two of the last four games with 24 overall.
BIG SOUTH TOURNAMENT SEEDING IMPLICATIONS
This week's trio of games will provide the Highlanders a path to controlling their own destiny when it comes to seeding in the Big South Tournament. Currently, the Highlanders sit with the 10th seed, but their three remaining games are against Hampton (sitting in 7th) and Presbyterian (sitting in 8th). Radford is currently locked into playing in the first day of the tournament but improving their seeding with a win streak could move them into a match-up with the eight or nine seed of the tournament at noon on the first day of March.
ICYMI BIG SOUTH SCHEDULE CHANGES
Radford has had their home game against Hampton postponed and rescheduled. The previously scheduled game at home against Hampton also has been rescheduled for this week on February 24th at 6 p.m.
