BOX SCORE JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. — For the second straight game, the Radford baseball team came up on the short end of a high-scoring affair, falling to East Tennessee State 14-9 on Tuesday evening at Thomas Stadium.
ETSU (17-5) was clicking on all cylinders, totaling 13 hits as a team. The Buccaneers set the tone early, as Jackson Green hit a grand slam in the first inning to put ETSU ahead 4-0.
Though they trailed for most of the night, the Highlanders certainly did not go down easy. In the sixth inning, with ETSU leading 6-1, second baseman
Ty Dooley kickstarted a big inning with an RBI grondout to first base. After catcher
Bradlee Preap drove in a run with a single, designated hitter
James Taussig laced a two-RBI throught the left side to make it a 6-5 ballgame.
However, the Buccaneers had the response, plating four runs in the seventh and three in the eighth to seal the win, helped by a three-run blast from Kyle Rachels.
Zack Whitacre was a bright spot for Radford (7-17), as the third baseman went 2-for-3 with an RBI and three runs. Whitacre got the visitors on the board in the fourth inning, when he singled with one out and came around to score on a double-steal, touching home plate just before teammate
Ty Dooley was tagged out at second.
The Highlanders were able to muster a rally in the ninth, as Preap chipped in an RBI single to make it a 14-7 game. Left fielder
Tanner Barrs followed that up with a two-run double that made it 14-9, but Taussig was promptly retired on a flyout to end the game.
