Highlanders’ Offense Explodes for 5-1 Victory Over Marshall

RADFORD, VA. – The Radford women's soccer program did not let a rainy night slow them down as the team exploded with four goals in the second half to pull away and take down Marshall 5-1 Sunday night.

Radford and Marshall both got off to a quiet start in another muggy night. Both teams combined for just three total shots through the first 15 minutes of the game. That tone changed in an instant as Skyler Prosser broke the scoreless tie with a fantastic shot from outside the box to the opposite corner of the net. Amy Swain collected an assist on the goal, her first of three for the night.

Two minutes later the Thundering Herd responded with a goal of their own to even things at one-all. Starting goalkeeper Jordan Phillips was excellent for Radford making two big saves that kept Marshall from adding on early. Radford made sure to bring the heat immediately coming out of the locker rooms for the second half.

Just one minute into the second half Radford locked in a lead. Helena Willson and Swain connected for passes deep into Marshall territory. After Swain passed it to Kat Parris, Parris spun around the defender to create an open shot and secure the 2-1 lead. That advantage would hold for 21 more minutes until Radford played add-on.

After two assists, Swain decided to get in on the goal scoring with her fourth in as many games in the 67th minute. Paige Olson earned the assist on the goal, then a minute later turned around and scored her first goal of the season in a breakout performance for the Roanoke, Va. native.

Radford wasn't done yet as in the 74th minute June Stevens earned her first goal of the Fall. After the Marshall goalie made a neat shot on another attack by Swain, Stevens found herself open and didn't miss to make it a 5-1 advantage. That final score would hold as Radford earned its third victory of the year to move to 3-1-2.

Swain was the reigning Big South Offensive Player of the Week coming into this week and made her case to repeat. The junior is having a breakout season and has totaled four goals and three assists over the last four matches. The five points were a career single-game best for Swain, who's previous single-game high was two. Swain's 11 points this season are currently tied for the most in the Big South.

Despite only lining up for two corner kicks, Radford still dominated the offensive end of the game again tonight. Radford outshot Marshall 13-9 with nine of those 13 shots on goal. It is also the sixth straight game the Highlanders have outshot their opponent. While Marshall was able to get off six of their nine shots on goal, Phillips kept things locked down with a career-high five saves.

"I'm glad the team bought into our gameplan," commented head coach Ben Sohrabi. "One of the things we wanted to do tonight was play really strong defensively and not give their forwards many opportunities. We had respect for their forwards and our backline played tremendous tonight. It was great to see us score some goals after struggling a bit lately; and to get five tonight was great."

The hot Highlanders do not have a midweek match-up this week, but will be back in action this Saturday, September 10th for their final nonconference home match against Western Carolina.
