Women’s Basketball Fights, Comes Up Short at High Point

HIGH POINT, N.C. – The Radford women's basketball program went into hostile territory Saturday afternoon at High Point and fought all afternoon before falling 70-62. Ashlyn Traylor highlighted the game with her third career 20-point performance.

The hot-shooting Panthers stayed that way in today's meeting and opened the game on a 63% shooting clip, outpacing the Highlanders who still shot a decent 43%. The Panthers used second chance opportunities and worked in the paint to gain and control their lead.

The freshman duo of Olivia Wagner and Traylor got off on the right foot combining for an early 11 points, but Radford trailed 22-12 after a quarter. As they've done all conference season, the Highlanders refused to back down. To close out the half the team went on an 11-3 run to pull within four at halftime.

During that run, Wagner cut through the defense for her ninth points of the day and Carmen Williams followed with a three-pointer. With under two minutes left in the half, Williams added two more points at the free throw line and Vanessa Blake quickly caught fire for another four points setting up her big second half.

Facing a quick-paced team like High Point that lives and breathes off the three-pointer was sure to set up for a game of runs. Entering the second half, Radford was in control. Traylor and Carmen combined for four points in the third minute of the third quarter. Trailing by just three, Maci Rhoades came off the bench and had the equalizer for Radford nailing a three-pointer to make it 39-all.

High Point responded with a 7-0 run of their own, however, and retook a lead they wouldn't give back the rest of the way. After layups by Traylor and Blake Radford would draw closer but still trail 51-44 headed into the fourth. Blake would score six straight points for Radford as she continued to fuel the offense in the second half, but the Panthers had a response for every make to stay ahead.

Radford held the Panthers scoreless for three minutes straight mid-way through the fourth but were unable to get a basket to go on their own end. As it became a free-throw shooting game with under two minutes to go, Traylor took full control and scored the Highlanders last 11 points. It wouldn't be enough to upset the hosting Panthers, though, as they held on to win 70-62.

KEPT THE PANTHERS QUIET
While High Point was able to use the paint and second chance opportunities to fuel their offense today, Radford took away the Panthers' most deadly weapon, the three-ball. High Point only shot 22% from three today after back-to-back games with 14 or more made three-pointers. Radford only shot 22% as well from deep, but four different Highlanders would finish the day with three-pointers including Wagner, Rhoades, Williams and Ashley Panem.

TRAYLOR AND BLAKE FEAST IN THE PAINT
Traylor and Blake were phenomenal offensively again today combing for 36 points. Traylor would finish with 21 points, her third 20-point performance of her career while Blake finished with 15 points. Both went to work on the boards as well. Blake picked up seven rebounds while Traylor pulled down a team-high nine rebounds and just missed the fourth double-double of her career.

UP NEXT
After finishing the week 1-1 against some quality opponents this week, Radford will turn its attention to another pair of tough opponents in Longwood and USC Upstate next week. Wednesday night hosts a battle at Longwood set for 7 p.m. while the team returns home to host USC Upstate on Saturday, a return visit by the Spartans as the two teams have already matched-up earlier this season.
