Women’s Basketball Drops First Game of the Season Against Norfolk State

RADFORD, VA. – The Radford women's basketball program fell in a tough nonconference meeting 64-44 with Norfolk State Sunday afternoon.

Radford and Norfolk State entered Sunday's meeting with the same goal in mind with both teams 2-0 record-wise to start the year. Norfolk State's defense was as advertised, but they used their best shooting performance of the season to defeat the Highlanders shooting 46% overall and 41% from three.

In the first quarter it was turnovers that had the Highlanders battling from behind. Six Radford turnovers turned into four points for the Spartans as Radford used a pair of three-pointers from Maci Rhoades and Pa'Shence Traylor-Walker to keep things close 15-10 at the end of the first.

Radford started the second quarter right with a quick 5-0 run fueled by a layup from Bria Beverly who then went on to assist a three-ball from Ashlyn Traylor-Walker. The Spartans responded with a 5-0 run of their own broken up by a layup from Taniya Hanner right before the first media break of the quarter.

The offense struggled to get shots to land after that, though, as Radford made just two shots over the final five minutes of the half. A three-ball by Olivia Wagner with 30 seconds left kept things within reach as Radford trailed just 29-23 at halftime.

The Spartans came roaring out of the halftime break for their best quarter of the evening, scoring 19 points to pull further ahead. Wagner and Rhoades hit another pair of three pointers to try and keep the pace, but Radford was now down 48-36 heading into the final quarter looking for answers.

Terissa Lavoile-Brice would come alive for four points to go with her already six rebounds to start the fourth quarter. Norfolk State seemingly had an answer for every Radford attack, however, as their lead never fell below 10 for the remainder of the game. A four-minute scoreless stretch between the sixth and second minute allowed Norfolk State to fully pull away as Radford dropped the contest 64-44.

NOTABLES
  • Taniya Hanner led Radford's scoring department on the evening, scoring nine points while accumulating four rebounds and a season-best three steals.
  • The Spartans continued the trend of high-shooting free throw opponents for the Highlanders this season. After Western Carolina shot 73% (7-11) at the charity stripe earlier this week, Norfolk State used every opportunity they had shooting 92% (11-12).
  • Radford set a season-high in assists today at 13 led by Lavoile-Brice's three with Ashlyn, Ellie Taylor, Wagner, and Joi Williams all also collecting a pair.
