Ashlyn Traylor-Walker Sets New Career-High as Highlanders Dispatch Catamounts

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The Radford women's basketball program dispatched Western Carolina in a dominant 67-49 win Thursday night as the squad was led by Ashlyn Traylor-Walker's most impressive double-double yet with a career-high 25 points and 12 rebounds.

Coming into a hostile environment the Highlanders needed to set the tone early and set the tone they did. The Highlanders burst out the gates to a 7-0 lead in the first two minutes as Ashlyn immediately put up five points while Ellie Taylor capped the run with a driving layup of her own. The Catamounts responded with a 7-0 run of their own leading a to a 9-9 tie by the end of the first quarter.

After a rough start shooting-wise for both programs, the second quarter was a complete script flip. Maci Rhoades opened the quarter with a three and Joi Williams quickly followed to put Radford up 15-12. A 4-0 run by the Catamounts gave them their first lead.

Taniya Hanner stepped up for the team, scoring seven points over the final six minutes of the half. Thanks to a three-ball by Olivia Wagner and a few more points by Ashlyn, Radford was able to hold a 32-28 edge at the half. Leading at the half is a crucial stat for the Highlanders who are 14-3 when leading at the half dating back to last season.

To maintain that lead, Radford would lean on its defense to create opportunities on the offensive end. Despite some size mismatches, Radford owned the paint, finishing the night with 40 paint points to Western Carolina's 22.

Ashlyn, Wagner and Hanner played a big role in that as the trio combined for 29 points in the second half primarily inside the arch. Wagner, in fact, was near-perfect from mid-range tonight shooting 5-6 inside the arch.

With that offensive push Radford was able to combat each of Western Carolina's comeback attempts. After leading by as much as 49-31 midway through the third, the Catamounts stormed back to end the corner and put Radford's lead at just 50-40 entering the final quarter. Radford would buckle down, score seven of the quarter's first ten points, and cruise the rest of the way for the eventual 67-49 win.

NOTABLES
  • Ashlyn's career-high 25 points is a new career-high breaking her previous high of 21 she set in her debut one year ago against Emory & Henry.
  • The road nonconference win is a large one for the Highlanders who won just one nonconference road game last season 73-57 at Queens, (NC).
  • Needing a good night on the boards, Radford more than delivered. Radford won the rebound battle 40-26 earning eight second chance points to the Catamounts' six.
  • After a tough first quarter, the shooting was on point the rest of the way. Radford shot 50% or better in each of the final three quarters, including a blistering 70% in the second quarter.
  • Three Highlanders finished in double figure scoring including Ashlyn (25), Hanner (13), and Wagner (11).
  • Terissa Lavoile-Brice just missed back-to-back double figure rebound games as she finished the night with nine.
