Softball Sweeps Midweek Doubleheader Against ETSU

RADFORD, Va. –The Radford softball program picked up a pair of strong wins at home Tuesday afternoon, defeating ETSU 7-1 in the first game and 7-5 in the second game.

Game 1
Radford wasted no time getting the bats going in the first game of the day with Emily Smith keeping her hot streak rolling. After Laura Thompson drew a walk, Smith crushed a home run over the left field fence to make it a 2-0 Radford lead. That would allow freshman pitcher Natalie Jones to settle in and dial up 3 innings of one-run ball.

The Highlanders would immediately add to that lead again in the second inning. Natalie Moya opened the inning with a walk and Laura Thompson reached once again with a single. Lexie Roberts did the rest, singling up the middle to score Moya. After Cori McMillan walked to load the bases, senior Abby Wilson used her patience to draw a walk and make it 4-0 Radford.

Chloe Greene took over in the top of the fourth for Radford in the circle pitching an unscathed three innings of work. In the sixth inning, ETSU would pose a threat loading the bases with zero outs. The freshman never wavered, retiring three straight batters to keep the 4-1 lead.

Radford would pile on some insurance in the bottom of the sixth for three more runs and a 7-1 lead. With two outs and just Thompson on base, Radford rallied. McMillan picked up an RBI with a single through the left side and Abby Wilson followed her up with another single up the middle for the seventh run of the game.

From there, Emily Spingarn entered to pitch the final frame of the game and retired three of the four batters she faced. Radford would win 7-1, their first back-to-back victories of the season after picking up a win over Bryant last Sunday.

Game 2
Radford kept the bats hot in the second game of the day, but this time waited until the second inning to start the scoring. Foster Sharpe led things off with a single and Cassi Barabto laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to move her to second. McMillan drew a walk and Kari Shedrick roped a big-time double to score both McMillan and Sharpe.

That gave Radford a 2-1 lead and starting pitcher Skyler DeHart some room to work. The senior pitcher would go five innings for Radford holding ETSU to just two runs in a much-improved start. After a three-up three-down top of the third and DeHart navigating around some baserunners in the fourth, Radford would strike again.

The biggest offensive inning of the day got started by Shedrick singling through the right side. She would steal second setting up Thompson to single her home for the 3-1 lead. Roberts followed suit, singling to left and scoring Thompson to make it 4-1.

Sharpe would add her first RBI of the day by scoring Roberts to make it 5-1 and then the Highlanders would take advantage of a costly error by the Buccaneers. An error in left allowed two more runs to cross and end up being the deciding factor of the game.

In the fifth inning ETSU would mount their first attempt of a comeback on the night. The first two batters reached and with one out an error made it just a 7-2 lead. Thompson made a fantastic diving catch in left field and had the awareness to pick off the runner who had left third base for the team's seventh double play of the season.

That double play would prove crucial as well when the Buccaneers struck hardest in the top of the seventh. A solo home run made it just a 7-4 Radford lead and suddenly the bases were loaded with just one out. Ellen Palya entered the game and retired two of the four batters she faced ending the game with an emphatic strikeout to seal the 7-5 victory and her second save of the season.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Seven different Highlanders knocked in runs today including Thompson, Roberts, Sharpe, Shedrick, Emily Smith, McMillan and Wilson. The Highlanders would light up the scoreboard with 14 runs today giving their pitching department some room to work with and lead the team to its third straight win.

Radford threw a host of pitchers again this afternoon including Jones, Greene, DeHart, Emily Spingarn and Palya. The team totaled five strikeouts and did a great job at bending, not breaking, to keep ETSU relatively quiet and avoiding any big innings.

UP NEXT
Radford will gear up for their next weekend tournament coming up at the ECU Pirate Clash. Competition begins Friday morning as Radford starts the first game of the tournament at 10 a.m. against Saint Francis (PA). The team follows that up with another game just past noon against Bucknell.
