Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Radford Falls at Tough Gardner-Webb Squad

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Radford women's basketball program came up short in a tough one Wednesday night 70-49 against the Big South leaders Gardner-Webb.

Radford and Gardner-Webb started off tonight's game similar to the game earlier this season that came within the Dedmon Center. Both teams traded blows, but Gardner-Webb was able to take advantage of a flurry of early turnovers. Radford was held to just two shot attempts through the opening minutes and did most of their work at the free throw line.

The second quarter ended up being the most complete performance for the Highlanders on the night as the team outpaced the Runnin' Bulldogs 17-16. Ashlyn Traylor got the scoring started and a run fueled by Rachel LaLonde, Carmen Williams and Ashley Panem had Radford down just 27-32 with three minutes left in the half. A costly 10-2 run by Gardner-Webb, however, would give the opponents a commanding 42-29 lead at the break.

The offense struggled to find its footing going forwards and was held to just 20 points over the remaining two quarters. Gardner-Webb pulled away and won the contest 70-49. Radford did get a late run in the final minute thanks to freshmen Maci Rhoades and Emma Fox. Rhoades converted an and-one opportunity while Fox pulled down a rebound and sunk another perfect two free throws for Radford.

Inside the box score, LaLonde was still able to pull down eight rebounds against a big Runnin' Bulldogs squad while tying her career high in blocks with four. Williams led the scoring efforts with 10 points while LaLonde, Wagner and Traylor all finished with six or more points.

NEAR PERFECT AT THE CHARITY STRIPE
It doesn't get much better from the free throw line than it was tonight for the Highlanders. As a team, the Highlanders shot 16-17 (94%) and did a good job at drawing Gardner-Webb into some foul trouble. LaLonde and Wagner both were a perfect 4-4 from the free throw line while Williams was also stout going 3-4. Fox added to that total with her pair of free throws in the closing minutes.

UP NEXT
Radford is back at home this Saturday and will look to stay hot inside Dedmon when they host Charleston Southern. The Highlanders and Buccaneers are set for a 2 p.m. tip on ESPN+.
