Softball Falls in Pair of Tight Games at Winthrop

ROCK HILL, S.C. –The Radford softball program fell in a pair of tight games Saturday afternoon at Winthrop with both contests finishing with 2-1 final scores.

Game 1
The Highlanders got off to a strong start in the first game of the afternoon thanks to freshman starting pitcher Chloe Greene who tossed a gem. Greene didn't allow a baserunner until the third inning and held the Eagles scoreless through five innings.

In the opening inning the Highlanders tagged a run onto the Eagles' ace thanks to some timely hitting by Cori McMillan. After Lexie Roberts single to center and stole second, with two outs McMillan came up with the RBI hit to left field that scored Roberts. That 1-0 advantage would hold for almost six innings for Radford.

While Radford was able to collect six hits on the day, only the first inning would feature multiple hits by the Highlanders. Run scoring opportunities came and went in the third, fourth and sixth innings which kept the lead short.

In the bottom of the sixth the Eagles struck with a two-run homer that would prove to be the game-winner. Cassi Barbato got the rally started in the top of the seventh, but a double play ended the game 2-1 in the Eagles favor.

Game 2
Radford and Winthrop dueled again in the second game of the day to the same tune of a 2-1 final score. This time the Highlanders played from behind 1-0 and got some great pitching out of freshmen Natalie Jones and Malorie Reeves.

Jones got the starting nod once again for Radford and opened the game with three straight scoreless innings. Radford's offense wasn't able to get anything going and Winthrop took a 1-0 lead off a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth.

The Highlanders responded in kind with a solo homer of their own in the top of the fifth inning to tie the game at one-all. Needing a spark, Abby Wilson came off the bench and crushed a pinch hit home run over the left field fence. A costly error in the bottom of the fifth would give the Eagles the lead that held to the end 2-1.

UP NEXT
The Highlanders take the national stage tomorrow afternoon for a 2 p.m. first pitch against Winthrop on ESPNU for the series finale.
