Highlanders Come Up Just Short in Series Finale Pitchers’ Duel

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Radford softball program came up just short in the weekend finale against Winthrop Sunday afternoon 2-1 despite another great pitching performance by a freshman pitcher, this time Malorie Reeves.

Reeves picked up right where she left off at the end of Saturday's game two and was dominant in her seven innings of work in front of a national audience. Reeves went four straight innings of work without allowing a run to set up the Highlanders for their first lead of the day.

To lead off the fifth inning, Abby Wilson crushed her second home run of the weekend over the center field wall to give Radford the advantage. A costly error allowed a run to score and tie the game up in the bottom of the fifth, however.

Rachel Smith led off the top of the seventh with a triple to try and spark a rally. Three straight outs kept the Highlanders scoreless, though, and set up Winthrop in the bottom of the seventh. The first three Eagles would reach base without a ball leaving the infield. Reeves dialed up a double play to try and escape the jam, but another infield single sealed it for the Eagles in walk-off fashion 2-1.

Radford's freshmen pitching showed off this weekend and were excellent in shutting down the Eagles' offense. The trio of Reeves, Natalie Jones and Chloe Greene combined to allow just six runs, of which only three were earned in 21 total innings of work.
