Radford Tied For 2nd, Corbett Tied For Individual Lead At Big South Championships

NINETY SIX, S.C. – Following a first round that left them out of the top four, the Radford men's golf team carded an absolutely blistering second round and stormed into second place at the 2023 Big South Men's Golf Championships on Monday.

The Highlanders went 296-286—582 (+6) through the first 36 holes of the tournament and are just three strokes behind the Longwood Lancers (+3) for the top spot. The top four teams in stroke play will advance to match play for a shot at the conference title.

Junior Bryce Corbett came into the week leading the Big South with a 72.08 stroke average across 24 rounds this season and he did not disappoint. The standout golfer shot just 75 in the first round before finding his groove and torching the course for a second-round 66 to tie for first place.

Corbett's 66 matches his career-low on a Par 72 course and was easily the lowest score of any competitor on the day. He birdied six of his final seven holes and ended the day with a field-leading 12 birdies overall.

Joining his teammate in the Top 10 of the player leaderboard was Patrick Gareiss, who shot an even 72 in the first round and a solid 74 in the second. The senior birdied the 13th hole both times through the course and finished the day with seven birdies to propel him into a tie for ninth place.

Nathan Piatt (T-14th, +4) and Nicholas Taliaferro (T-21st, +6) also played well enough to contribute to Radford's scoring, posting best rounds of 72 and 73, respectively.

Having gained some solid momentum playing as an individual in the team's last two tournaments, Channing Blevins was given his second starting nod of the season. The junior struggled to keep pace in the first round and shot an 81 before being substituted for Bobby Dudeck.

Dudeck then came out firing in the second round, rewarding Head Coach Mike Grant's decision with a strong 1-over par 73. Clearly staying ready to play, he tallied four birdies to finish the day strong.

Radford leads all teams with 36 birdies, excelling especially on Par 4's where they went +22 with a 4.22 stroke average.
