SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Freshman catcher
Garrett Pancione had another tremendous day, recording three hits and three RBI, but it was not enough as the Radford baseball fell to USC Upstate 16-10 in the series finale between the two teams at Harley Baseball Park on Sunday afternoon.
Pancione started off his day with a sacrifice fly in the second inning that plated
Austin Stalker, cutting the Radford deficit to 4-1. Later in the frame, third baseman
Ryan Gilmore laced an RBI double down the left field line to cut the deficit in half.
Gilmore also had a productive day at the dish for the Highlanders (8-33, 0-15 Big South), going 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles.
In the third, Pancione added an RBI single on a comeback to the pitcher, and in the fourth, the Warrenton, Va. native poked a single to left that drove in Stalker once more. For the day, Pancione was 3-for-3.
The game was an old fashioned slugfest, as the two teams combined for 26 runs on 32 hits. The Highlanders certainly never wavered, as Stalker tacked on two RBIs in the eighth inning with a single.
In the ninth inning, right fielder
Paul Moore mashed a two-run homer that curled around the right field foul-pole. Moore went 2-for-5 with two RBI in the series finale.
USC Upstate (26-15, 12-3) was led by a four-hit day from David Pereira, who tallied three RBI. The winning pitcher was Upstate's Chase Matheny, while
Luke VonGoedert took the loss for Radford.
