Jones Tosses Nine Innings of Solid Work as Radford Splits Doubleheader at Gardner-Webb

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. –The Radford softball program split their doubleheader Friday afternoon at Gardner-Webb after falling in game one 8-2, coming back to win the second game of the day 8-4.

Game 1
Due to some early costly errors, the first game didn't go the Highlanders way. Gardner-Webb scored in each of the three opening innings to amount to an 8-0 lead. With the Highlanders comeback from down 8-0 last weekend in the back of their minds, Radford tried to mount a comeback.

Natalie Jones would come into the circle in relief for the final five innings of the game allowing just two runs over that span. Needing a rally, Radford tried to ignite one in the top of the fourth.

Lexie Roberts reached thanks to an error and this time it was Radford who took advantage of a defensive miscue. On the very next batter, Laura Thompson took advantage of an error in center field to come all the way around for an inside the park homer to give Radford two runs on the board.

The offense wasn't able to fully get going from there, however, as Gardner-Webb held on for the eventual 8-2 final score.

Game 2
The freshman pitcher Jones picked up where she left off in the first game and continued to throw some solid innings of work for the Highlanders. Her offense would provide a lead in the top of the first after a two-out single by Cori McMillan scored Lexie Roberts and made it a 1-0 lead.

The Runnin' Bulldogs would strike for two runs in the bottom of the first to briefly go up 2-1, but it was their last lead of the day as Radford quickly tied things up in the second. Kyndall Stanley led the inning off with a walk and a Natalie Moya single scored Stanley to tie the game up at two-all.

In the top of the third, the offense continued to click. After Roberts reached by error, Thompson walked and Abby Wilson walked to load the bases with none out. McMillan would get the job done with a fielder's choice to score Roberts and give Radford the 3-2 lead. Rachel Smith added another hit to score McMillan and Thompson to make it 5-2 Radford. After another hit by Stanley, Qween Edmonds capped the big inning with another single to score Smith and make it a 6-2 Radford advantage.

From there, Radford pitching would take over the game and ensure the Highlanders' victory. Jones tossed another two innings of scoreless work while Chloe Greene entered at the end of the fourth inning and went the rest of the way for her third save of the season.

A McMillan double gave her three RBIs in just four innings of play for Radford's seventh run of the game. Radford got its eighth run of the game in the sixth thanks to a Wilson RBI single that scored Roberts, part of a four-run game for the freshman.
