Defense Shines in Scoreless Tie at Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. – The Radford women's soccer program was back on the road Thursday afternoon and drew a physical 0-0 tie at Richmond. Both squads were evenly locked offensively, but a stout defensive effort by the Highlanders helped post their second straight shutout.

In Richmond's pair of losses this season, early goals proved the decider and the Highlander offense worked early trying to exploit that same result. Just four minutes in Paige Olson connected with Katelyn O'Donnell deep in the box for Radford's first shot on goal. A great save by the Spiders' keeper would keep Radford off the board.

Both teams remained deadlocked as the two teams traded possessions looking for open looks. In the 24th minute the freshman Lexi Radvanyi, making her first career start, got her first save of the game of a strike with a weird bounce from about 20 yards out. The Highlanders remained physical, drawing nine fouls in the first half before pulling up scoreless at the 45-minute mark.

Coming out in the second half it was the Spiders who brought the intensity early. Richmond made a nice pass out of Radford's corner and had a good look, but a diving Radvanyi again kept things scoreless. In the 60th minute, Richmond made another long strike from about 20 yards out and Radvanyi stood strong pulling in her third save.

From there, the Highlanders would flip the intensity. The Highlanders offense rallied around the 75th minute getting off five shots and two corners in just a four-minute span. The two corner kicks were the lone attempts in the match. Off the second corner, chaos erupted in the box as Radford got the keeper out of the net. A header from Skyler Prosser seemed on target but rang out just on the odd end of the post.

From there Radford continued its strong defense that limited the Spiders' opportunities despite a strong effort over the final 15 minutes. Radvanyi had participated in 45 minutes of Radford's shutout over Mount St. Mary's last weekend, but today she played the full 90 and her first solo shutout of the year.

"It was a pretty even game," commented head coach Ben Sohrabi. "I thought both teams had great work rate and created a handful of chances each. We were good today but not quite our best soccer. Getting a tie on the road against a quality opponent wasn't our goal but it's a step in the right direction."

Radford returns to the home field for their next match as they will host another in-state foe Hampton this Sunday, September 3rd. The Highlanders and Pirates square off for a third straight season with a 7 p.m. kickoff on ESPN+.
