Women’s Soccer Surfs the Turf in Rainy 3-1 Win Over Appalachian State

RADFORD, VA. – The Radford women's soccer team looked sharp despite rainy conditions in a dominant 3-1 victory over Appalachian State Sunday afternoon. Helena Willson, Alexeis Kirnos and Paige Olson all provided goals in the winning effort.

A rainy weekend left wet field conditions for the two teams Sunday and it wouldn't let up for the majority of the 90 minutes played. Despite those conditions, Radford weathered an Appalachian State attack early. The Mountaineers fired off two corner kicks and two shots in the opening minutes, but freshman goalie Lexi Radvanyi was stout once again making multiple solid plays backed up by her defense.

In the 23rd minute, Radford would get its first golden opportunity off a yellow card from Appalachian State. Placed just outside the box, Willson ripped off a perfect shot into the top right corner of the net to give Radford a 1-0 lead.

Just ten minutes later, another yellow card by Appalachian State once again gave Radford another scoring opportunity. Kirnos lined up for the penalty kick and gave it a strong tap to the left side of the net fooling the goalie and making it a 2-0 lead. The goal marked back-to-back contests for Kirnos after her score earlier this week at Tennessee.

The Highlanders wouldn't have to wait long to extend their lead even further. Just one minute later, continuing to push in Mountaineer territory, Kirnos placed a perfect ball to Olson who drove down the field and arched her shot past the stretched goalie into the top left corner of the net to give Radford all the offense it would need for the afternoon.

Leading 3-0 coming into the second half, Radford just needed sound defense to close out the impressive win. Appalachian State would score in the 72nd minute to claw back and make it a 3-1 match, but a costly second yellow card that led to a red card and an ejection in the 77th minute sealed the Mountaineers fate.

Inside the box score it was a milestone day for Kirnos as her assist on the third goal put her at 50 points in her Radford career. With two goals this week, the senior leader is now up to 10 goals over the last two seasons. Willson's goal was her first of the season and seventh in her career. Olson's goal was also her first of the season as now 11 different Highlanders have scored this season.

"Appalachian State's a good, physical and athletic team," commented head coach Ben Sohrabi. "We did well at playing our game today. Moved the ball, possessed the ball and finished. We matched their intensity. That's the growth we've shown over the season so far playing Radford brand soccer and getting smarter on the mental side."

Radford closes out their nonconference schedule in their next match at Wofford on Friday, September 15th. Action will be streamed on ESPN+ with kickoff set for 7 p.m. in Spartanburg, S.C.
