Miscues Cost Highlanders at Terriers

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – A brief slew of miscues in the 47th minute of Friday night's contest between Radford and Wofford cost the Highlanders mightily in a losing result, 2-1. Wofford scored both their goals within the minute and a Radford comeback would come up just short over the final 40 minutes.

In the first half of Friday night's game the Highlanders maintained almost complete control over the match getting consistent opportunities in enemy territory. At the halftime break Radford was outshooting Wofford 7-4 and had five corners to their opponent's three. That pace would maintain throughout the rest of the match.

Opening up the second half, Wofford took advantage of two scoring opportunities in the 47th minute that gave the hosts a 2-0 advantage. What was in the Highlanders favor was almost a full second half still to be played and they used every minute.

The Highlanders continued to pressure the Terriers relentless until finally the seal broke in the 57th minute. After a deflected shot, Amy Swain found June Stevens with an open look just in front of the net. Stevens struck the ball quickly past the remaining defenders and outstretched goalie to make it just a 2-1 deficit.

Despite the constant pressure and finishing the match up 15-9 in corners and 9-3 on corners, Wofford would hold on for the win. It would mark Radford's first loss in Spartanburg against Wofford winning in their last four visits.

"It was a frustrating night," commented head coach Ben Sohrabi. "Even though the score didn't go our way I thought we played very well for 87 minutes. Those first three minutes in the second half cost us. We have to be more focused in the beginning of the second half. We had our chances to tie or win but didn't capitalize."

Tonight's match concludes nonconference play for the Highlanders as the focus now moves to Big South competition. The conference portion of the schedule kicks off next Saturday as Radford plays host to Presbyterian for a 7 p.m. matched streamed on ESPN+.
