RADFORD, Va. – The Radford women's basketball program fell to Gardner-Webb Wednesday night 63-58 despite big offensive performances from Ashlyn Traylor-Walker (15 points) and Taniya Hanner (20 points).
Wednesday's contest got off to an explosive start offensively as Gardner-Webb built an early lead by hitting their first five shots before Radford would respond with a run of their own. Trailing 9-1 three minutes in, Ashlyn hit a three to ignite the offense. Another three by Ashlyn and five straight points by Hanner put Radford on a run while back-to-back layups by Pa'Shence Traylor-Walker and Ellie Taylor gave Radford its first lead at 20-19.
An 8-0 run going into the second quarter put Gardner-Webb back out front 27-20. Radford responded with a run of their own with threes from Joi Williams and Pa'Shence to pull back up 28-27. Both teams would trade baskets as offenses stayed hot until the final two minutes. After Ashlyn scored a layup to tie the game at 34-all, neither team scored the rest of the way for the halftime score line.
Radford would post three and a half scoreless minutes on the defensive end to start the third quarter as layups from Hanner gave Radford its biggest lead so far at 40-36. After a Gardner-Webb three, layups by Olivia Wagner and Pa'Shence kept Radford up 44-41. Radford would only get one made shot from the floor over the final five minutes of the third allowing Gardner-Webb to hold a 51-48 lead.
The scoring drought moved into the fourth quarter as Radford wasn't quite able to put together another run. The defense kept things quiet for Gardner-Webb, but the Runnin' Bulldogs were still able to use timely shooting for a 59-53 lead, their biggest since the first quarter.
Radford didn't back down getting makes from Hanner plus an and-one from Terissa Lavoile-Brice that pulled things with 59-58. Radford had multiple opportunities, but it was Gardner-Webb who responded with the final dagger. A three-pointer with 1:32 remaining put Gardner-Webb up for good in the 63-58 final.
