FRIPP ISLAND, S.C. – Shooting +54 as a team over three rounds, the lowest in program history at the conference championship, the Radford women's golf team placed 5th at the Big South Championships on Tuesday.
Kicking things off in the first round of the Big South Championships the Highlanders recorded a 314 (+26) as a team. Hannah Lindemann would pace the Highlanders in the first going 77 (+5) and Macy Johnson would be right behind her by one stroke at 78 (+6). Caroline Gilreath would finish the round with a 79 (+7), Shea Smith would go on and record a 80 (+8) and Mckenzie Weddle recorded a 82 (+10) before heading to the next round.
In day two of the tournament the Highlanders would improve upon their first-round outing going 310 (+22). Johnson and Smith would go on to both have the best scores for the Highlanders in the round as they would secure the 76 (+4) score. Lindemann and Weddle would secure 79 (+7) scores to finish up their day twos, and Gilreath would finish her day two outing at 80 (+8) and have the Highlanders in 7th place heading to the final day of stroke play.
For the Highlanders final day at the tournament, they brought an electric record-setting pace to finish their final day at 294 (+6) marking the lowest 18-hole round at the conference championship in program history. Weddle led the charge with her best round of the tournament at 71 (-1) draining five birdies. Johnson would also have her best round in the final day going 73 (+1) with Lindemann right behind her at 74 (+2). Smith would tie her best round recording another 76 (+4) on her scorecard and Gilreath would also tie her best round from day one at the tournament putting up another 79 (+7) to finish her time on the course. The Highlanders time at the tournament would come to to an end as they would climb up to 5th place but would come up 10 strokes short to advance to match play.
The Highlanders recorded the best par 4 stroke average at 4.29 and record the second most birdies as a team at 37 only trailing Winthrop by four. Johnson would have the second-best stroke average at par 3s at 3.00 and Weddle would have the third best stroke average for par 5s at 4.80.
