Purnell’s Late Goal Pushes Women’s Soccer to Fourth Straight Big South Win

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford women's soccer program was stout on the defensive end and got a late score from Katie Purnell to seal a 1-0 victory over UNC Asheville Saturday afternoon, their fourth straight Big South victory.

KEY STATS
  • Coming off the bench, Purnell's goal was the first of the season in her hometown of Asheville, N.C.
  • The Highlanders outshot the Bulldogs 17-6, but only five of those shots came on goal.
  • Lexi Radvanyi posted her fourth clean sheet of the season and third confined to Big South play.
  • Radford last won four straight open Big South play in 2016.

PLAY BY PLAY
Radford's offense was aggressive early drawing a corner and offsides in the opening minutes. Shots wouldn't come easy early on, though, as the Bulldogs defense was as advertised. After a line change midway through the half, Radford was able to draw a few more corners but no looks came up with that ice breaking goal.

Radford's offense would continue to keep at it in the second half as the shots started to ramp up. In the 62nd minute, Radvanyi would make a great diving save on the Bulldogs' best look at a goal in the match.

The save proved big as in the 76th minute, Radford would finally find their lone goal. After Lilly Short put a ball on goal that the keeper was able to save, Purnell collected the ricochet and made a great move to create space. The hometown kid finished strong, putting an expert shot to the opposite side of the goal that gave Radford a 1-0 lead.

Radford's defense wouldn't allow a look on goal the rest of the way. With the clock at zeroes, the Highlanders were able to maintain their perfect start to the Big South season with their fourth straight win.

SOHRABI QUOTABLE
"I thought we played extremely well today," commented head coach Ben Sohrabi. "Credit to UNC Asheville, they had a good defensive strategy, and it was tough to break down in the final third, but we kept creating chances and finally one went in. It was great to see the hometown girl Katie get a goal in Asheville. I would have liked to have converted another chance or two, but in October it's always great to get a win."
