Fourth Quarter Effort Not Enough as Women’s Basketball Falls to Winthrop
2/12/2025 9:40:00 PM | Women's Basketball
RADFORD, Va. – The Radford women's basketball program fell despite a late push in the closing minutes Wednesday night in a 78-68 final to Winthrop.
KEY STATS
PLAY BY PLAY
Wednesday night's action inside Dedmon got off to a solid start for the Highlanders who immediately sprinted out to a 15-5 lead. Carlson kicked off the scoring while Firebaugh and Williams quickly followed, firing off a pair of threes. After five straight points from Carlson put Radford up 15-5, Winthrop called a timeout.
Out of that timeout, the Eagles went on an extended run scoring 15 points before the first quarter closed. A three by Williams put Radford briefly back ahead to start the second, but Winthrop would keep rolling to take a lead they'd never relinquish.
Scoring eight of the half's last 11 points, the Eagles were now ahead 40-32 at halftime. To start the third, the Eagles kept rolling, scoring the first 10 points to build their lead further. Radford's offense would struggle throughout the quarter, only scoring seven points.
Over the final seven minutes of the game, Radford wouldn't back down going on a 27-10 run to try and salvage the decision. Traylor-Walker came alive to fuel the effort, but the free throws and some late threes wouldn't be enough as Winthrop held on 78-68.
