Close Match Slips Away for Men’s Soccer at VMI

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Radford men's soccer program fell in a tight finish Wednesday afternoon in a 1-0 final at VMI.

KEY STATS
  • Radford ripped 17 shots to VMI's 11, but only five of those shots came on target.
  • Kenshin Akimoto and Dax Booth led the squad with four shots each.
  • The Highlanders also outdrew the Keydets in corners 8-2.

PLAY BY PLAY
An intensity was present on both sides going into Wednesday's in-state battle, showing up immediately as each team received cards in the first 15 minutes of play. Radford's fast paced offense got off a few shots, but VMI struck for the lone goal of the game in the 27th. After some contact in the box, the Keydets got off a shot that found the back of the net for the 1-0 edge.

Radford would search for the equalizer over the next 60 minutes of play but wasn't able to come up with it despite multiple strong looks. Nine different Highlanders took shot attempts, totaling 17 across the match and 13 in the second half alone. By final whistle, though, Radford fell in the 1-0 final.

UP NEXT
The Highlanders will go back to Big South play when they stick to the road for their next match at UNC Asheville on Saturday, September 27th. Action is set to kick off at 2 p.m. on ESPN+.
