Host of Highlanders Set New Personal Records at Darius Dixon Memorial

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Radford indoor track and field teams had another stellar weekend, with several athletes setting new high marks across many events in the Darius Dixon Memorial Invitational at Liberty University on February 13 and 14.

"It was a solid week," said Director of Track & Field Shelli Sayers after the meet. "All our attention now turns to the (Big South) championships and putting together the best teams to score the most points possible."

NOTABLES

It's impossible not to start the highlights without bringing up Jeylah Hamrick's performance in the 400 meters. The sophomore destroyed the competition, running a 53.70 in the race to smash her section and get the event win. Hamrick's time set a new meet record and was another Radford and Big South record.
Makayla Nelson ran a personal best 7.66 second 60 meters to qualify out of the prelims and into the semifinal round on Friday. The sophomore then put up a 7.60 in the event, becoming the second-fastest Highlander in the sprint event.
The Radford men's distance medley relay posted a third-place finish and the third best time in program history with a time of 10:14.67. The group of Charlie Dance, Andrew Picataggi, Quinlan Beegle and Spencer Thacker beat Big South foes UNC Asheville and Longwood.
Beegle narrowly missed out on taking the top spot in the men's 800 meter open, settling for second. His time of 1:55.32 bested several athletes from high mid-majors such as Navy, Charlotte, and George Mason.
Though not a personal record, the women's 4x400 meter relay squad (Hamrick, Mattie Flores, Raichelle Cornelius, Jordan Jackson) managed to finish a strong second place with a 3:42.34. Winning their section, the Highlanders were just nipped by Virginia's time of 3:41.71 for the meet record and first place in the event.
Jackson set a new personal record with a 56.58 in the 400 meters.
Freshman Kandace McIvor did well across the board. In the 500 meters, she placed six overall out of 15 participants with a time of 1:19.48. She also posted a season-best in the long jump with a 5.23 meter (17'2") leap and added a personal record in the 60 meter hurdles.
The duo of Leah Moye and Aliyah Taylor combined to have a solid weekend. Moye set a new personal record with an 8.94 in the 60-meter hurdles to be the top Highlander in the event. Taylor placed sixth in the triple jump (10.99 meters) and added the season best performance in the long jump (5.15 meters).

UP NEXT
Select Highlanders will compete at the VT Challenge hosted in Blacksburg next February 20-21. They'll be getting ready to go for the Big South Championships the following weekend.
