Hamrick, Magson, and Women’s 4x400 Meter Relay Set More Records at Doc Hale Invite

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Radford indoor track and field teams proved why they're some of the best athletes to wear the Highlander red and white with several outstanding performances at the Doc Hale Invitational in the Rector Field House at Virginia Tech this weekend. While most athletes were in Blacksburg, several of the men competed at the VMI Winter Relays on Saturday.

"I am really impressed how the group did this weekend," said Director of Track & Field Shelli Sayers. "On the men's side it was an important moment because our field athletes did a great job considering they are new to the program. Quinlan (Beegle) and Charlie (Dance) ran great too and continue to lead the team. The women were outstanding. Sophie (Magson) is having an incredible season. She is the only Highlander to break the 4:50 mark (in the mile). Jeylah (Hamrick) and the 400 meter crew were just inspiring for everyone. They took on a big challenge in the 4x4 and brought the house down."

NOTABLES
  • Jeylah Hamrick once again highlighted things for the Highlanders, setting a new Big South record in the 400 meters. The sophomore bested her closest opponent by over a second with a time of 53.82. Jordan Jackson, Grace Onwi, and Jaslyne Robinson also added personal bests in the event.
  • For the second straight week, the Radford women's 4x400 meter relay squad of Hamrick, Jackson, Mattie Flores, and Raichelle Cornelius broke the school record. The time of 3:40.20 was four seconds faster than the previous record set two weeks ago in Blacksburg and was the second fastest in Big South history. Meanwhile, the "B" team of Janaya Moore, Onwi, Robinson, and Kandace McIvor ran a 3:51.03 to put themselves fourth on the all-time performance list.
  • Despite feeling under the weather, senior Sophie Magson set a new school record in the mile with a 4:48.19, finishing fourth overall. That time was an improvement of over three seconds after setting the record two weekends ago in Blacksburg. A trio of Highlanders in Cora Gentzel, Mia Farley, and Allison Nelson also ran personal bests.
  • Hamrick narrowly missed another school record in the 200 meters, finishing just over a tenth short of Khadijah Conda's time of 24.14 set back in 2000 for second on the all-time performance list. Cornelius also set a new personal best in the 200 meters.
  • Senior Charlie Dance ran a personal best and the third-best time in Radford men's indoor track history in the mile, clocking a 4:14.58.
  • Jaelynn Joiner etched her name in the third spot on the all-time performance list for the triple jump. Her mark of 12.19 meters (40') gave her a fourth-place finish overall. She also took a third-place finish in the women's long jump with a leap of 5.72 meters (18' 9.25"). Though not a personal best, the freshman was the top Big South participant, beating out athletes from High Point and Gardner-Webb.
  • Newcomer Andrew Picataggi competed at the VMI Winter Relays and placed fourth overall in the men's triple jump. His mark of 14.24 meters (46' 8.75") was the third best in the event in school history. He also competed in the men's long jump at Virginia Tech on Friday for the first time at Radford and placed fifth out of 13 participants. His mark of 6.85 meters (22' 5.75") is 10th on the all-time performance list.
  • Makayla Nelson took a second-place finish in the women's high jump, just being beaten by an inch for the top spot. She also bumped up to a tie for fourth on the all-time performance list for the 60 meters. She also managed a third-place finish in her heat.
  • Quinlan Beegle posted a 1:57.21 at the VMI Winther Relays in the 800 meters, good enough for ninth on the all-time performance list.
  • Delaney Eller came out in top in her section of the 3000 meters with a time of 10:18.81, also a personal best.
  • Jaylen Rosser placed fourth in her section in the women's shot put. Her mark of 12.12 meters (39' 9.25") was an improvement of over five feet from earlier this season.
  • Spencer Thacker set a new personal best in the mile at VMI on Saturday, clocking in with a time of 4:27.94.
