Highlanders Off to Stellar Start at Big South Outdoor Championships

HIGH POINT, N.C. – The Radford Track & Field teams have set themselves up for a strong result after day one. The men's team picked up seven points, while the women's team added eight points while also adding many qualifiers for upcoming finals on Wednesday.

"I'm so impressed with our women," said Director of Track & Field Shelli Sayers after the first day. "Today is survive and advance, and they did their jobs. Pushing three to the 200-meter final may be the most ever in program history. Kayla (Fields) was outstanding. She just impresses us every time she steps on the track. Andrew (Picataggi) jumped four PRs to secure huge points in the long jump. He was the top freshman in the event and I couldn't be more proud. Azrael (Cabusao) run for the 10K and he really stepped up when it counted."

NOTABLES
  • Kandace McIvor was the first Highlander to compete on Monday, finishing all four of the seven events in the heptathlon. Her best finish was fourth in the 200 meters (26.16 seconds), while the senior also turned in a season-best mark of 8.46 meters (27'9.25") in the shot put to place seventh. McIvor has 2550 points after four events, with the long jump, javelin, and 800 meters coming up tomorrow.
  • Competing in the long jump for the first time this outdoor season, Andrew Picataggi advanced into the finals and finished sixth overall to score three points for the men's team.
  • Jaelynn Joiner accounted for the first three points for the women's team with a sixth place finish in the long jump. Leah Moye also managed to reach the finals and placed ninth overall.
  • Jaslyne Robinson headlined the 400-meter hurdles for the Highlanders. Her time of 1:00.41 was more than good enough to win her heat, setting the fastest time overall. The senior looks to be the athlete to beat in the finals on Wednesday.
  • A trifecta of Highlanders punched their tickets to the 200-meter dash on Wednesday. Jeylah Hamrick dominated her heat to post the top time overall at 24.02 seconds. Janaya Moore posted a personal best time of 24.56 to win the second heat and punch her ticket to the finals. Makayla Nelson narrowly lost her heat by several thousandths of a second but managed to qualify on time in the final spot. Radford has the most runners in the women's 200-meter final, with High Point and Charleston Southern getting two athletes through.
  • Sophie Magson (2nd overall) and Sienna Bailey (7th overall) made it through to qualify for the 1500-meter final. Magson was just over a second behind High Point's Brianna Malone. Cora Gentzel ran a personal best in the event, but came up just a couple seconds short of qualifying for Wednesday's final.
  • Concluding the day in the 10K final, Kayla Fields ran a steady race to place fourth overall with a time of 36:40.76. In the men's 10K, Azrael Cabusao finished strong, holding off a charging Charleston Southern runner to take fifth place in 31:10.78.
