Highlanders Top Buccaneers, Pile on Points for 10th League Win

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Radford women's basketball team (18-11, 10-4 BSC) scored a much-needed, bounce-back win, taking down Charleston Southern, 92-78, on Saturday afternoon at the CSU Field House. The win gives the Highlanders double-digit conference wins for the second consecutive season.

KEY STATS
  • Radford scored 20+ points in each quarter to tally 92 total, a new season-high in regulation against a Division I opponent.
  • After a tough night last Wednesday, the Highlanders shot better than 50 percent (34-67, 50.7%) for the third time in their last four contests.
  • All five starters reached double figures, with Joi Williams leading the charge with 22 points. The junior is now just 15 points away from reaching 1,000 career points.
  • Radford dominated the points in the paint, outscoring the Buccaneers 42-26. They also scored 18 points off turnovers to Charleston Southern's seven.
  • The Highlanders tied a season high with 20 assists, last accomplished in the win at Presbyterian on December 31.

PLAY BY PLAY
The first quarter was close throughout, with both sides going back and forth answering each other's makes. Radford opened with the first two scores, the first coming via a Kirah Dandridge make off a Georgia Simonsen steal. Charleston Southern never led by more than a couple. Trailing by one with a minute left in the first period, Williams nailed a three-pointer before being fouled on the next trip. The junior made both free throws to extend the lead briefly to four before Charleston Southern sank a trifecta to make it 23-22 after one.

The longest run by either team in the first half came midway through the second quarter. An Ellie Taylor jumper, scoring her first of 10 points, gave Radford a three-point lead with 8:03 left before half. A Buccaneer turnover led to another Williams three, and Simonsen added another make before Charleston Southern took a timeout. Out of the break, Dandridge came away with a swipe, and Simonsen cashed a short jumper to make it a 10-point Highlander advantage. It was the end of Radford's 10-0 run, which only took less than two minutes of game time. Charleston Southern cut the deficit to four before some makes by Cate Carlson extended it back to a 49-39 lead at halftime.

Charleston Southern continued to score, but so did the Highlanders. A key stretch in the third came as the Buccaneers began sinking threes. Dandridge provided the response, nailing trifectas in consecutive trips to keep it a double-digit lead midway through the third. The senior made four three-pointers in the quarter, which was double of her single-game total from behind the arc entering the day. Anaiah Jenkins scored the final basket of the third to make it 69-60.

Unlike the game back in Radford, the Buccaneers never got enough stops to threaten in the fourth quarter. A second-chance basket by Simonsen with just over seven minutes remaining extended Radford's lead to 14. Taylor later answered a Charleston Southern layup with a three ball to keep the lead at 14 points with 4:31 left. The Highlanders went a perfect six-for-six from the charity stripe in the closing minutes, helping to ice away the double-digit win.

McGUIRE QUOTABLE
"It feels great to win here," said Head Coach Mike McGuire after the game. "It's a difficult place to play. The environment is awesome. (Charleston Southern) is a very talented team. They are a very uncomfortable team with the number of scorers and playmakers they have. It's a good bounce back win for us after getting outplayed on Wednesday night."
