Highlanders Edged in NorPac Finale at Davidson

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Radford was edged at Davidson, 2-1, in its final NorPac match of the season, Saturday afternoon from Belk Turf Field. Britti Himelfarb scored both goals, including the game-winner in the 44th minute for the Wildcats. Freshman Niamh Connolly (Fredericksburg, Va.) tallied the Highlanders' lone goal.

The Highlanders (8-10) drop to 3-3 in the conference and into a tie with Longwood for third place. Radford will have to await Stanford's results in its final two matches to determine what seed they will be at the 2008 NorPac Championship on Nov. 6-8 in Farmville, Va.

With the match looking like it was going into halftime scoreless, Himelfarb gathered a deflected shot on the left side of the goal and fired in a strike into the cage, putting Davidson up, 1-0, with 32 seconds to play. Her score was one of only four shots taken by both teams in the first 35 minutes of action, and gave the 'Cats (6-12, 1-5 NorPac) the lead going into the half.

Radford tied the game at one in the 41st minute, when Connolly took advantage of a misplayed outlet pass by the Davidson defense. She dribbled in and slipped the ball to sophomore Kay Tufts (Virginia Beach, Va.), who took a shot from three yards out. Connolly redirected the shot into the right side of the goal for her third tally of the year. It was Tufts' third assist of the season.

Himelfarb recorded the game-winner just under three minutes on a give-and-go with teammate Kathelijn van der Ven. She collected a pass from the right side of the circle into the middle of the goal, where she scored from four yards out.

Radford had two chances to tie on shots by sophomore Lara Cariker (Fredericksburg, Va.). On a corner in the 52nd minute, her attempt beat the keeper, but Liz Luckey made a defensive save to deny the tying goal. She got a shot off with 33 seconds left, however Brittany Rolleck secured the win with her second save of the game.

Davidson outshot Radford, 8-5 with each team earning five penalty corners. Junior Megan Stucke (Richmond, Va.) made two saves for the Highlanders. Cariker and senior Stephanie McLamb (Gloucester, Va.) each registered two shots for Radford.

Radford closes out its regular season, Sunday, Nov. 2 when it heads to Appalachian State for a 1 p.m. match.
