FARMVILLE, Va. – No. 5 and host Longwood used two early goals and went on to defeat fourth-seeded Radford, 3-0, Thursday afternoon in Game 1 of the NorPac Championships at Longwood's Athletics Complex. Julia Hernandez and Olga Knop each recorded a goal and an assist for the Lancers and Erin West made four saves to earn the shutout.
Longwood will advance to the semifinals and play No. 1 seed California on Friday, Nov. 7 at 1 p.m. Radford (9-11) will play on Saturday, Nov. 8 at 9:30 am in the fifth place game.
On its first two shots, Longwood scored a pair of goals in the first 11:38 and carried a 2-0 lead into halftime. Hernandez put the Lancers on the board 4:24 into the match, when she gathered a bouncing ball just inside the circle and ripped a ball near post into the back of the cage.
In the 12th minute, Hernandez took the insert on a corner and slipped it to Knop on the left. She roofed a sweeping shot giving Longwood its two-goal advantage.
The Lancers held 6-2 advantages in both shots and corners. West stopped both of Radford's shots, while junior goalkeeper Megan Stucke (Richmond, Va.) made two saves for the Highlanders.
After back-and-forth play in the second half, Radford, starting in the 60th minute, earned four corners and four shots in a 2:55 span. However, each shot was denied, including a defensive save by Knop on Lara Cariker's (Fredericksburg, Va.) shot from the top of the circle.
The Lancers scored an insurance goal with just over three minutes to play on a corner. Knop's slow-rolling shot was redirected into the cage by Carra Bunner to give Longwood a 3-0 lead.
Longwood outshot Radford 11-8 and held a 10-7 advantage in corners. Stucke finished with six saves for the Highlanders. Stephanie McLamb (Gloucester, Va.) and Cariker recorded two shots apiece for the Highlanders. Longwood's Carla Binnewies led all players with four shots.
