FARMVILLE, Va. – Lauren Calve scored with 27 second left to lift No. 7 Davidson past No. 4 Radford, 3-2, in the NorPac Championships' fifth place game, Saturday morning from Longwood's Athletics Complex. The goal came after Radford had tied the game with just over four minutes to go.
The Wildcats (8-14) took advantage of a Highlander (9-12) turnover with a little over a minute to go in the game and turned it into just their second corner of the match. The initial play was stopped, but Clare Perry controlled the loose ball and slipped it in front of the cage where Calve one-timed it for the game-winner.
In the second half, Kathelijn van der Ven gave the Wildcats a 2-0 advantage in the 42nd minute. She dribbled into the circle and let go a reverse stick shot that beat Radford keeper
Megan Stucke to the right.
Radford, who outshot Davidson, 17-6, continued to put pressure on Davidson and it finally paid off in the 55th minute when
Holly LoJacono (Prince Frederick, Md.) cleaned up a rebound on the far post during a corner.
In the 66th minute, the Highlanders earned their 12th corner of the match. After freshman
Marlee Schramm's (Mantua, N.J.) shot from the left was saved by Brittany Rollek, the rebound went right to freshman
Madonna Wadolowski (Norwalk, Conn.). She settled the ball and ripped into the cage, tying the game with 4:15 left.
It was the fourth goal of the season for both LoJacono and Wadolowski.
Along with outshooting Davidson, Radford also earned 12 corners to just two for the Wildcats. Rolleck finished with nine saves and Christine Rau had a defensive save. Stucke made two saves and LoJacono recorded a defensive save for the Highlanders.
Sarah Addison scored in the first five minutes of the first half and Davidson took a 1-0 lead into halftime. After the goal, Radford penetrated the circle several times, but came up empty after earning five corners and taking five shots. Two of the Highlanders' shots were on goal late in the half, but Rollek made two saves keeping them off the scoreboard.
Davidson took advantage of its only corner and two shots of the half. In the fifth minute, Christine Rua's shot on the corner was stopped by LoJacono. After an ensuing scramble in front, Addison poked home a feed from Britti Himelfarb, giving the Wildcats the early lead.
Radford would pressure the rest of the half, but Davidson's defense stood tall, clearing away circle penetrations and denying all five corner opportunities.
For her efforts in Radford's games in Farmville, senior back
Christine Fairchild (Lehighton, Pa.) was named to the NorPac All-Tournament team.
The Highlanders concluded the 2008 season with nine wins, the most since the 2004 season and was ranked nationally in both shutouts per game and penalty corners per game.
