- After running through January 7-1, including five straight road victories, Radford will open a new month and conclude its three-game road trip with a 7 p.m. tip at Winthrop Monday evening.
- The Highlanders are off to their best start in Big South play since recording a 12-2 conference mark during the 2000-01 season.
- It's been 20 years since Radford has strung together six straight triumphs away from home. That streak came during the Highlanders' school record 19-game winning streak in 1978-79.
- Even though two of Radford's victories required overtime, each of its 11 wins have come by double figures. The Highlanders' average margin of victory against league opponents is 16.2.
- Along with ranking T-12th nationally in rebounds per game (10.4), Art Parakhouski continues to lead three Highlanders in double figures averaging 14.3 points per game.
Joey Lynch-Flohr and
Kenny Thomas are just behind the 6-11 center contributing 13.9 per outing. Junior
Amir Johnson continues to pace Big South leaders in assist with an average of 5.2 per outing.
- To go with his work on the offensive end and on the glass, Parakhouski has recorded a total of 11 blocks in the last two contests, including four straight to spark a 15-2 run to start the second half at Gardner-Webb.
Eric Hall (1.3) and Parakhouski (1.2) sit fifth and sixth in the conference, respectively, in blocks per game.
- As a team, Radford leads the league or ranks in the top three in the following categories -- Scoring margin (3rd/+3.6), field goal percentage (2nd/.461), field goal percentage defense (1st/.399), three-point field goal percentage defense (2nd/.318), rebounding margin (1st/+5.6), blocked shots (2nd/4.19) and defensive rebounds (1st/27.6).
- Winthrop enters 6-14 overall following a 70-53 setback at Charlotte Saturday evening. Five of the Eagles' wins have come in league play as they hold a 5-5 mark against the Big South.
- Radford will enjoy a four-day break from action before returning to the Dedmon Center for a 7 p.m. contest with Presbyterian Saturday evening.
Series History
- Tonight's meeting marks the 55th all-time, with the Highlanders holding a 28-26 edge in the series.
- Prior to Radford's 21-point victory over the Eagles earlier this season at Peters Hall, Winthrop had won 12 straight against the Highlanders.
- In their last meeting, Art Parakhouski and
Kenny Thomas combined to score 44 points and Radford held Winthrop to just 18.5 percent (5-27) shooting in the second half as the Highlanders cruised to a 73-52 victory. Leading 38-34 at the break, Radford opened the second half on a 17-6 spurt and didn't allow the Eagles closer than 14 points the rest of the way. Parakhouski finished the evening with 24 points on 11-of-12 from the floor and pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds, while Thomas recorded his second-straight 20-point outing.
- Radford's last win over the Eagles at the Winthrop Coliseum came on Feb. 9, 2002.
Last Time Out
- Along with drilling 64 percent of its attempts in the second half, Radford held Gardner-Webb to just seven field goals in the period to record its fifth straight road victory, 76-57, Saturday evening at Paul Porter Arena.
- Trailing by two at the break, Radford opened the second half on a 15-2 run, highlighted by six straight points from
Kenny Thomas and four consecutive blocks from Art Parakhouski to grab the lead for good. To go along with their streak, the Highlanders began the frame 12-of-17 (70.6 percent) from the floor and stretched their lead to as many as 21 (76-55) on a
Chris McEachin layup.
- Thomas led four Highlanders in double figures with 19 points on 7-of-14 shooting including three jumpers from downtown. Parakhouski finished with 16 points, nine rebounds and five blocks, while McEachin added a season-high 15 points off the bench, and
Joey Lynch-Flohr (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) scored 12 and had eight boards.
- Gardner-Webb hit its first six shots including nine points from C.J. Hailey to take an early 14-8 lead. The Highlanders slowly chipped away at the deficit and took a 29-28 advantage, on Parakhouksi's three-point play with 45 seconds remaining in the opening period. Aaron Linn answered the next trip down the floor with his second trey of the game to send the Bulldogs into the half up, 31-29.
- Both clubs finished with 14 offensive rebounds, but Radford controlled the overall total, 43-33. To go along with their work on the glass, 48 of the Highlanders points came from inside the paint.
