Blacksburg, Va. – A hard fought doubles match and solid singles play helped Radford to a 5-2 defeat over Appalachian State in women's tennis action Saturday afternoon at Burrows-Burleson Indoor Tennis Center.
The Highlanders improved their record to 2-1, while Appalachian State fell to 0-3.
With the doubles point on the line, the team of Antonietta Iosue (Damascus, Md. /Damascus) and Mirna Matic (Umag, Croatia/Vladimir Gortan Buje) used powerful serves to capture the doubles point for the Highlanders. Petra Dajevic (Zagreb, Croatia/Sportska gimnazija) and Ivana Tomaic (Zagreb, Croatia/Third Gymansium) used precise ground strokes and good volleys to easily roll to victory at No.1 doubles.
In singles action, Tomaic quickly dispatched Blackeley Bean at No. 3 singles 6-0, 6-0 while Dajevic and Mia Drobnjak (Umag, Croatia/Sportska gimnazija) have yet to falter in this young season. Dajevic improved to 3-0 at No.1 singles with a three-set victory over Monica Tomas of Appalachian State while Drobnjak had straight set victory over Olivia Stannard to also improve her record to 3-0.
The Highlanders return to the hard courts tomorrow afternoon as the travel to Elon to face the Phoenix is a 1:00 match.
