CLINTON S.C. – Right fielder Jesse Harmon went 4-for-4 and doubled in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning to lift Presbyterian to a 5-4 win over Radford in Sunday's Big South baseball series finale at PC Baseball Complex.
Harmon singled in each of his first three trips to the plate, then with two outs in the seventh inning, launched a long fly ball off the base of the left field wall to bring home shortstop Andrew Williams, giving the Blue Hose (3-15, 1-7 Big South) a 5-4 lead.
Third baseman Jared Combs led off the decisive seventh with a solo homer over the left field fence, tying the game at 4-4. Two batters later, Williams singled through the right side, then stole second base to get in scoring position for Harmon.
Then, in the ninth inning with freshman second baseman
Brett Mollenhauer (Roanoke, Va./Hidden Valley) standing at second, Presbyterian second baseman Zac Rinesmith ranged high and to his left to snare a line drive off the bat of freshman shortstop
Jeff Kemp (Bowie, Md./Archbishop Spalding), then made the toss to first for the force out, ending the game.
Presbyterian had to rally from a 4-3 deficit, as the Highlanders plated a run each in the third through sixth innings. Radford (7-9, 2-2) pushed across the afternoon's fourth run when Mollenhauer singled to left field to bring home junior center fielder
Tyren Rivers (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond River), giving Radford its first lead of the afternoon.
Radford, which trailed 2-0 after the first inning, tied the game at 3-3 in the fifth when junior right fielder
Reggie Keen (Danville, Va./GW-Danville) crossed the plate on a wild pitch. Keen's run was set up on his steal of second base and a throwing error from the catcher that advanced Keen to third.
Harmon led the Blue Hose with his four hits, the only Presbyterian player with a multi-hit day. First baseman Kenny Bryant (first inning) and Combs each added solo homers.
Mollenhauer and senior first baseman
Alex Gregory (Great Falls, Va./Paul VI) posted 3-for-4 days for Radford, with both driving in runs. Gregory's RBI came in the third, when he got the Highlanders on the board with two outs on a single to center field that scored Mollenhauer.
Right-hander Andrew Foushee earned the win (1-1) with 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, picking up the first victory of his collegiate career.
Radford righty
Abram Williams (Radford, Va./Radford) took the loss (0-2), working a career-long 6 2/3 innings in the process. Williams allowed all five runs on eight hits, while striking out a career-best eight hitters.
Newcomers to the Big South, the Blue Hose won their first-ever conference game.
Radford returns to the diamond on Tuesday, traveling to James Madison for a 3 p.m. first pitch.
