Keen's Eighth-Inning RBI Leads Baseball to 7-5 Victory, Series Win Over Winthrop

Box Score

RADFORD, Va. – Junior Reggie Keen's (Danville, Va./G.W.-Danville) two-out RBI single in the eighth inning lifted Radford to a 4-3 win over Winthrop in the final game of a Big South baseball series at Radford University Baseball Field on Sunday.
Keen's go-ahead RBI single was his only hit of the day for the Highlanders (10-10, 4-3 Big South), which won their second straight game and series against the Eagles (15-10, 6-3).
After Winthrop picked up a pair of runs in the top of the eighth to tie the game at 3-3, the Highlanders set up the go-ahead run on senior third baseman Nick Minter's (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem) one-out single to center field. Minter was lifted for freshman pinch runner Matt Hillsinger (Bowie, Md./Archbishop Spalding), who moved into scoring position by stealing second base. Then, after right-hander Tyler Mizenko retired junior catcher Robert Lamas (Annandale, Va./Paul VI) for the second out, Keen lifted the 0-1 offering from Mizenko the opposite way into right field, scoring Hillsinger from second and giving Radford back the lead.
Mizenko took the loss (1-3) for the Eagles.
In the top of the ninth, Winthrop shortstop Kevin Nolan led off with a single to right, but went no further, as freshman right-hander Jason Patten (Davidsonville, Md./Archbishop Spalding) got the next three hitters to pick up the save (4) and give Radford the win.
Winthrop set up the decisive eighth inning by rallying from down 3-1 in the top of the eighth. First baseman Eddie Tisdale walked to lead off the inning, and second baseman Bryn Henderson got his first hit of the afternoon, doubling to right field to advance Tisdale to third. Catcher John Murrian's groundout to second brought home Tisdale, then right fielder Scott Sullivan singled through the left side to score Henderson and tie the game at 3-3. Junior righty Jake Quigg (Glen Arm, Md./Loyola) set down the next two men to limit the Eagles to just the two eighth-inning runs. Quigg, who entered with a man on in the eighth, picked up the win (2-1).
Minter led the Highlanders with a 3-for-4 day, and his RBI double in the fourth started a two-run inning for Radford. Senior first baseman Alex Gregory (Great Falls, Va./Paul VI) had the other multi-hit effort with a pair of singles and a run, scoring on Minter's double.
Murrian, Tisdale and third baseman Matt Thielepape had two hits each for Winthrop. Left fielder Cam Walters scored the Eagles' third-inning run, coming home from third on a wild pitch.
Both starters went seven innings. Winthrop right-hander Robert Lake allowed three earned runs on eight hits, fanning five and walking one. Radford redshirt freshman righty Abram Williams (Radford, Va./Radford) allowed one run on seven hits with two strikeouts and a pair of walks.
Radford continues its non-conference schedule with a game on Tuesday at Salem Memorial Ballpark, home of the A-Advanced Salem Red Sox, against No. 21 (NCBWA) Virginia. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
