INDIVIDUAL STANDINGS
NINETY-SIX, S.C. – Battling through windy and wet conditions, the Radford women's golf team posted an opening round 320 Monday and is currently in second place at the 2009 Big South Championships.
The 54-hole event hosted by High Point University is being played on the par 72, 5,956-yard Patriot Club layout.
Radford sits just five strokes behind Coastal Carolina in the team standings, while Charleston Southern, Winthrop and Gardner-Webb are tied for third at 322.
Megan Leineweber (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) carded the Highlanders' lowest round with a five-over 77. The junior is alone in third place just four strokes off the pace and two swings back of second.
Freshman
Jade Okamoto (Huntington Beach, Calif./Marina) is just one behind Leineweber following a 78 on her first 18 holes.
Radford's
Maggie Watts (Paris, Ky./Paris) opened with an eight-over 80 to put her in a tie for 12th with two others, while
Hannah Coles (Birmingham, England/The Coleshill School) and
Brittany Hine (Elkton, Va.) will enter round two tied for 27th and 32nd, respectively.
In search of their first league title in school history, the Highlanders have never finished higher than fourth in the championship.
Aruka Felgueroso of Coastal Carolina opened with a one-over 73 and holds a two-stroke advantage over Charleston Southern's Olivia Higgins on the individual leaderboard.
The 2009 Big South Champions will receive the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Regionals.
Round two of the three-day event will begin Tuesday morning at 8 a.m.
