Highlanders Begin Spring Play with Pair of Victories at Oyster Shuck Match Play

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Radford women's golf program kicked off their spring schedule this week at the Oyster Shuck Match Play and knocked off some rust to earn a pair of victories over Presbyterian and Winthrop.

In the first round of action, Gardner-Webb slipped past Radford in an eventual 3-2 final. Mckenzie Weddle and Shea Smith were able to pick up their first wins over the tournament while Hannah Lindemann also started her strong week with an individual win.

Trailing by as many as three holes, Weddle battled back and finished strong through the back nine to build a lead all the way up to five before going final. Smith also battled back, going down by as much as three holes before battling all the way back to clinch an individual win with two holes still to play.

With the rust knocked off, Radford turned its focus to another Big South foe in Presbyterian and earned a decisive 4-1 team win. Macy Johnson got in the win column outlasting her opponent with a solid performance, never trailing to seal her match up with six holes still to play. Smith and Weddle finished Monday with perfect 2-0 marks as the duo claimed two more wins where the pair also never trailed. Wrapping up the results was Lindemann, who earned another individual victory.

In the final round of play Tuesday morning, Radford kept to their winning ways to dispatch Winthrop 4-1. Grace Addison picked up a strong victory while Weddle finished her tournament with a clean 3-0 record . Johnson and Caroline Gilreath added the two other victories for the Highlanders to clinch the match up. Lindemann also finished the tournament with another individual victory, finishing 3-0 overall.

The Highlanders return to the course on Sunday, March 1st in Aiken, S.C. to compete in the More Than Golf Invite. The tournament is set to be played at the Old Barnwell and hosted by Augusta University.
