Day 2 Results
RADFORD, Va. – Two more podium finishers and three school-record performances highlighted the second day of competition for the Radford track & field teams at the 2009 Big South Conference championships on Friday at Patrick D. Cupp Memorial Stadium.
Through two days, the Radford women sit fourth with 46.5 points, while the men rank fifth with 31 points.
First up to the podium was freshman
Justin Smith (Dayton, Va./Turner Ashby), a second-place finisher in the men's shot put at 16.19m (53'1.50”). Smith earned his first all-conference showing with a new career-best mark.
Rounding out the day's action was sophomore Ashlyn Sinclair's (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair) second-straight all-conference performance in the 3,000m steeplechase, finishing second at a time of 11:17.53.
Three records fell, including a 200m qualifying heat mark from junior
Raschad Kelso (Appomattox, Va./Appomattox), who moved into Saturday's finals with a record-setting performance of 21.42, besting the mark he set earlier this season.
Sophomore
Kevin Richards (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) took down his old school mark in the decathlon with 5,630 points, good for seventh place. Highlighting his competition was a third-place finish in the high jump at 1.91m (6'3.25”).
Freshman Lindsey Noe (Goldvein, Va./Liberty) shattered her pole vault mark set earlier this season, finishing fourth with a height of 3.25m (10'8”).
Several Highlanders also qualified for Saturday finals in track events. Leading the way was senior
Joel Hanlon's (Winchester, Va./Millbrook) top qualifying time in the 1,500m run at 3:55.41, a new personal-best.
Senior Dawit Legesse (Springfield, Va./Robert E. Lee) also hit the time for tomorrow's 1,500m final.
Kelso, junior
Olajuwon Jones (Indianapolis, Ind./Speedway) and senior
Jovan Coker (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) added qualifying times for the 400m dash, and Jones hit the standard in the 200m dash. Freshman
Brett Olinger (Timberville, Va./Broadway) also moved into the 400m hurdles final.
In women's qualifiers, sophomore Britney Whittaker (Pilot, Va./Radford) advanced to the 800m finals with a personal-best of 2:15.99, and Noe met the 400m hurdles time with a career-best of 1:06.15.
Liberty's men have a commanding lead on the field at 107 points, while Coastal Carolina's women are holding on to the top spot at 87 points.
