Baseball Hosts Davidson Tuesday; Heads to ETSU Wednesday

RADFORD, Va. – Radford baseball tests a four-game winning streak this week with a home-and-away mid-week schedule, hosting Davidson Tuesday afternoon and traveling to East Tennessee State Wednesday night.
The Highlanders (18-14), coming off a weekend Big South sweep of VMI, will attempt to play two weekday games for the first time since March 9-10. The weekend wins over the Keydets gave Radford its second conference sweep this season, and the fourth Big South series win in 2009.
Radford resumes a four-game homestand and plays its fifth straight at home Tuesday, welcoming Davidson to town. The Wildcats (13-20) have dropped seven of their last eight games and were swept in a weekend Southern Conference series at No. 27 (NCBWA) Georgia Southern. In 2009, Davidson and Radford share The Citadel as a common opponent, and the Bulldogs took two of three in Davidson, N.C. from the Wildcats April 11-12.
Davidson leads the all-time series with Radford 3-2, and the two teams split a pair of meetings last February (Feb. 23 – L 3-8; Feb. 24 – W 20-4). Through 33 games, shortstop Zach Kayne leads the Wildcats with his .359 batting average and 28 RBI.
ETSU and Radford meet for the second time this season on Wednesday night, and the Highlanders will travel to their fourth affiliated minor league facility when they visit Cardinal Field (Johnson City Cardinals – Rookie).  On April 8 in Radford, the Highlanders had a 7-0 lead through two innings and cruised to an 11-4 win. Freshman catcher Carl Travers drove in a career-high five runs, going 2-for-4 at the plate with a single and a double, while scoring a pair of runs. Travers drove in two of Radford's first inning runs on a two-out single down the left field line, giving the Highlanders a 5-0 lead. Radford also got a pair of runs driven in from senior first baseman Alex Gregory, who went 2-for-5 and launched a two-run home run over the right field fence in the first inning to give the Highlanders a 3-0 lead.
The Buccaneers enter this week as winners of four straight, including a weekend Atlantic Sun series sweep of USC Upstate. ETSU travels to Knoxville to face Tennessee Tuesday night before hosting Radford Wednesday.   Through 37 games, second baseman Ben Allen leads the team with a .356 average, first baseman Paul Hoilman has 39 RBI and third baseman Bo Reeder leads the way with his 11 homers.
Radford Baseball Notebook:
- The weekend sweep of VMI moved Radford to 11-4 in home games this season.
- In four wins last week, the Highlanders got six or more innings from each of their starting pitchers,
and three quality starts (6 IP, 3 ER or less) in the weekend sweep of VMI.
-  Radford's 10-6 Big South record is good for fourth place, 3 1/2 games behind first-place Liberty, and a game back of Coastal Carolina and Winthrop, tied for second.
- The Highlanders are first in the league in batting average (.326) and fourth in ERA (5.81).  Alex Gregory leads the conference in on-base percentage (.503) and ranks sixth in batting average (.393).   Freshman left-handed starter Paul DeVito is fourth in wins (5) and freshman right-handed closer Jason Patten is third in saves (6).
- DeVito and junior righty Aerik Taylor delivered back-to-back eight-inning starts for the first time this season (DeVito - Tuesday vs. Longwood; Taylor – Friday vs. VMI)
- With his save on Friday's win over VMI, Patten moved within two saves of the school's single season record of eight, set by Bret Lieberman in 2003.
- Radford scored more than 10 runs twice this week, and moved to 9-1 when scoring in double figures.
- Saturday's 10-inning win over VMI made the Highlanders 1-1 in extra innings.
Radford Probable Starting Pitchers:
Tuesday – Freshman LHP Paul DeVito (Annapolis, Md./Archbishop Spalding)
DeVito earned his fifth win of the season last Tuesday, working eight innings at home against Longwood.  Backing the late-game offensive outburst, DeVito blanked the Lancers over his final three frames. The freshman allowed just two base runners in the waning innings, and fired his third 1-2-3 inning in the eighth, before the Highlanders broke it open at the plate.  DeVito finished the game striking out eight, while allowing four runs on four hits.
Wednesday – Senior RHP Josh Hammonds (Herndon, Va./Herndon)
Hammonds will try once again to make his first start of the season Wednesday at ETSU. Last Wednesday, Hammonds tossed three scoreless innings in a start at No. 17 Virginia, which was halted and cancelled due to rain. On Sunday, Hammonds earned the win (2-0) with 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, coming on in the seventh inning with a man in scoring position to keep the game tied at 4-4.
