RADFORD, Va. – Radford staked itself to a 7-0 lead through two innings, and cruised to an 11-4 non-conference win over East Tennessee State at Radford University Baseball Field on a breezy Wednesday afternoon.
The win was the fourth in a row for the Highlanders (14-11), and sixth in the last seven games.
Freshman catcher
Carl Travers (Huntingtown, Md./Riverdale Baptist) drove in a game-high five runs, going 2-for-4 at the plate with a single and a double, while scoring a pair of runs. Travers drove in two of Radford's first inning runs on a two-out single down the left field line, giving the Highlanders a 5-0 lead.
Radford also got a pair of runs driven in from senior first baseman
Alex Gregory (Great Falls, Va./Paul VI), who went 2-for-5 and launched a two-run home run over the right field fence in the first inning to give the Highlanders a 3-0 lead. The homer was the third in four games for Gregory.
Freshman left fielder
Matt Hillsinger (Bowie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) led three other Highlanders with multi-hit afternoons, going 3-for-5 with an RBI and a pair of runs scored. Seniors
Nick Minter (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem) and
Ben Toth (Bedford, N.H./Manchester) had two hits each, and Minter crossed the plate three times.
Junior right fielder
Reggie Keen (Danville, Va./G.W.-Danville) extended a 12-game hitting streak when he opened the scoring with none out in the bottom of the first, hitting a single through the right side to bring home junior center fielder
Tyren Rivers (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond River), and give the Highlanders the early 1-0 lead.
Radford added another in the second on Hillsinger's two-out RBI single, and exploded for four more in the sixth. With the bases loaded and two away, Travers looped a triple into the left field corner to clear the bags, and give Radford an 11-1 lead.
East Tennessee State (14-15) was led at the plate by first baseman Paul Hoilman, who went 2-for-4 and drove in runs during the top of the seventh and ninth innings. Third baseman Bo Reeder added a 2-for-4 afternoon, and drove in a run in the fifth.
Freshman lefty
Paul DeVito (Annapolis, Md./Archbishop Spalding) worked 6 1/3 innings to earn the win (4-1), allowing just two runs on five hits while striking out five Buccaneers.
Right-hander Ben Andrews was tagged with the loss (1-3), failing to escape the first inning.
Radford returns to the road, and Big South play, on Friday by opening a three-game set at ranked Coastal Carolina. First pitch for game 1 is set for noon.
