Marshall Holds on for 5-3 Win Over Radford Baseball

RADFORD, Va. – Marshall got a two-run homer in the third from second baseman Brandon Casamassima and eight Thundering Herd pitchers scattered seven hits while striking out nine in a 5-3 non-conference win over Radford on Sunday at Radford University Baseball Field.
Casamassima was one of three Marshall (21-27) players with two hits and launched a two-run shot with one out in the third to give the Thundering Herd a 3-0 lead. Third baseman Josh Valle and shortstop Kenny Socorro each had two hits and an RBI. Center fielder Nathan Lape added a leadoff homer in the fourth to give Marshall a 4-0 lead.
Four different hurlers for Marshall registered two strikeouts, including winning left-hander Greg Williams (2-4) and righty Austin Coan, who earned his eighth save of the season. Williams tossed three scoreless innings in the start.
Radford (23-21) senior first baseman Alex Gregory (Great Falls, Va./Paul VI) hit his ninth homer of the season, and third of the weekend, in the bottom of the ninth inning to cut Marshall's lead to three runs.   The Highlanders added another when senior left fielder Steven Ellis (Centreville, Va./Westfield) reached on an error at second with one out that allowed senior third baseman Nick Minter (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem) to score, making it 5-3 Marshall.
Junior center fielder Tyren Rivers (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond River) led Radford at the plate, going 3-for -5 and scoring a run in the sixth on junior right fielder Reggie Keen's (Danville, Va./G.W.-Danville) double to the right field alley. 
Five different pitchers worked for Radford, including senior relievers Josh Hammonds (Herndon, Va./Herndon), Mark Beppler (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory), John Lloyd (Oak Hill, Va./Westfield) and T.J. Woody (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee), who allowed just one run over the final four innings.
Freshman left-hander Paul DeVito (Annapolis, Md./Archbishop Spalding) took the loss (6-3), allowing four runs on six hits in five innings.
Sunday's game was the 2009 home finale for Radford, as the Highlanders close out the season on the road, beginning Thursday in a 7 p.m. first pitch at Liberty.
