PULASKI, Va. – Right fielder Adam Yeager's two-run homer with two outs in the ninth lifted Marshall to an 8-7 non-conference baseball win over Radford Saturday night at Calfee Park.
Yeager's decisive swing came after pinch-hitter Alfredo Brito's one-out double off the wall put him in scoring position with the Thundering Herd (20-27) trailing 7-6. The next hitter, shortstop Kenny Soccoro scorched a line drive up the middle that was snagged by Radford freshman shortstop
Jeff Kemp (Bowie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) for the second out, holding the tying runner at second. Yeager then delivered his first homer of the season to give Marshall the lead.
Right-hander Austin Coan (7) worked a scoreless ninth to earn the save.
The Highlanders (23-20) couldn't hold on in the ninth, despite a 3-for-3 night and two homers from senior first baseman
Alex Gregory (Great Falls, Va./Paul VI). Gregory hit his seventh of the season in the fourth, a two-run shot in the fourth that highlighted a four-run inning for Radford. He added his eighth on a blast to left, leading off the ninth.
Left fielder
Will Naylor (Clifton, Va./Paul VI) went 1-for-2, driving in a pair on a single in Radford's four-run fourth.
Three Marshall players added two hits, including Yeager. Third baseman Josh Valle and first baseman Victor Gomez hit two hits each. Left fielder Rhett Stafford drove in runs in the first and third innings.
Left-hander Ryan Kiel (4-3) earned his second win this season against Radford (Feb. 27), getting two outs in the eighth.
Freshman right-hander
Jason Patten (Davidsonville, Md./Archbishop Spalding) took the loss (1-3), working a inning and a third.
Sophomore right-hander
Shane Pysh (Wheeling, W.Va./John Marshall) highlighted the work of four Radford pitchers, going four scoreless innings in middle relief.
The series concludes tomorrow at Radford University Baseball Field at 2 p.m. on Senior Day.
