Field Hockey Falls at No. 2 North Carolina

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Radford dropped an 8-0 decision at No. 2 North Carolina, Wednesday evening from Francis Henry Stadium. Defensively, junior keeper Jen Wisniewski (Centreville, Va.) stopped 12 shots and junior Megan Lenhardt (Gloucester, Va./Gloucester) made two defensive saves for the Highlanders (2-3).

North Carolina (7-0) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first 8:13 of the match. Melanie Brill connected on a direct corner at 2:35. Just under six minutes later Danielle Forward used a reverse stick for a 2-0 advantage.

The Highlanders defense, under constant pressure, fended off the Tar Heels for the next 18 minutes before Illse Davids found the cage in the 27th minute.

Before the goal, Wizniewski made three of her eight first half saves and Lenhardt recorded one of her two defensive saves. Junior Kay Tufts (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes) generated Radford's lone shot of the half, but her scoring attempt was blocked.

The Tar Heels tacked on five goals in the second half, closing out the scoring with a pair of markers in the final five minutes.

Tufts and junior Lara Cariker (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor) each registered a shot for Radford.

The Highlanders return home on Sunday, Sept. 20, hosting Rider at 1 p.m.
