Round One Scores
WAYNESVILLE, N.C. – Highlighted by rounds of 73 from
Megan Leineweber (Salisbury, Md. / Parkside) and
Hannah Coles (Birmingham, England / The Coleshill School), the Radford women's golf team sits in fourth place out of 24 teams following day one of the 2009 Great Smokies Intercollegiate.
The two-day event hosted by Western Carolina is being played on the Par 72, 5922-yard Waynesville Golf Resort layout.
Leineweber and Coles, who finished third and fourth respectively in the Draper Valley Intercollegiate, will enter the final day of competition tied for 13th, just four strokes off the lead, shared by four golfers, including two from Western Carolina.
Radford's
Jade Okamoto (Huntington Beach, Calif. / Marina) carded a season-low 75 to sit in a tie for 30th, while fellow sophomore
Amy McCollum (Pittsford, N.Y. / Pittsford) is one back of Okamoto following a three-over 78.
Maggie Watts (Paris, Ky. / Paris) rounded out the Highlander scoring with an 83.
As a team, the Highlanders fired a 299, which puts them 11 strokes back of third-place William & Mary (288) and 13 behind Western Carolina (286) and Elon (286), which will share the overnight lead.
Radford, which finished second in its fall opener, is one stroke clear of Charleston Southern and three ahead of Old Dominion.
After playing the front nine in 14-over par, the Highlanders bounced back with a three-under total on their inward nine, highlighted by three straight birdies from McCollum.
The 36-hole event will conclude Sunday. Radford and the top-three teams will tee off in groups of four beginning with a 9 a.m. shotgun start.
