GREENSBORO, N.C. – Battling wet conditions, the Radford women's golf team carded a 319 Sunday and sits ninth following round one of the UNCG Starmount Fall Classic.
The three-day / 54-hole event hosted by UNC Greensboro is being played on the Par 71, 6,265-yard Starmount Forest layout.
For the fourth consecutive round to begin the 2009 fall slate, senior
Megan Leineweber (Salisbury, Md. / Parkside) paced the Highlanders opening with a four-over 76, putting her in a tie for 19th.
Sophomore
Jade Okamoto (Huntington Beach, Calif. / Marina) is two strokes back of Leineweber following a 78, while
Maggie Watts (Paris, Ky. / Paris),
Hannah Coles (Birmingham, England / The Coleshill School) and
Amy McCollum (Pittsford, N.Y. / Pittsford) carded rounds of 81 or worse.
Radford, which has a runner-up and fourth place finish through its first two fall events, is just two strokes out of seventh and 16 out of fourth with 36 holes to play.
Campbell's Mary Mattson holds the top spot on the individual leaderboard following an even-par 71.
As a team, the Fighting Camels will enter Monday's second round with the lead after carding a 296. The host Spartans (298) are two strokes back of Campbell, while James Madison sits third, four off the lead.
Round two of the 54-hole event will be played Monday followed by the third and final round Tuesday.
