DRAPER, Va. – Highlighted by rounds of 73 and 74 from
Megan Leineweber (Salisbury, Md. / Parkside) and
Hannah Coles (Birmingham, England / The Coleshill School), respectively, the Radford women's golf team sits in second place following day one of the 2009 Draper Valley Intercollegiate Monday.
The two-day event hosted by Appalachian State is being played on the nearby Par 72, 5910-yard Draper Valley Golf Club layout.
Along with carding Radford's lowest total of the day, Leineweber (T-3rd) will enter the final round just two shots behind Western Carolina's Josefine Sundh, who opened with a one-under 71.
Coles, a 2009 all-conference selection and two-time medalists last fall, is also in contention following her round of two-over par.
Playing in just her fourth career event, sophomore
Amy McCollum (Pittsford, N.Y. / Pittsford) bettered her previous career-best by three strokes with a 76 to find herself tied for ninth with fellow Highlander
Maggie Watts (Paris, Ky. / Paris), while
Jade Okamoto (Huntington Beach, Calif. / Marina) shot 80.
Kelsey Lewis (Frankfort, Ky. / Western Hills) and
Sophia Montenegro (Oakton, Va. / James Madison) who are competing as individuals for Radford, recorded rounds of 83 and 86, respectively.
As a team, the Highlanders fired a 299, which puts them eight strokes back of Western Carolina (291) and 12 swings clear of third-place Gardner-Webb (311). Radford's round of 11-over par was just one off the lowest 18-hole total in school history.
The 36-hole season-opening event will conclude Tuesday. Radford will be paired in groups of two with Western Carolina beginning at 9:10 a.m.
