BOONE, N.C. – Radford was edged 2-1 at Appalachian State, Friday evening in NorPac field hockey action from Kidd Brewer Stadium.
The Mountaineers (5-5, 1-0 NorPac East) grabbed a 2-1 lead after one half of play and held off a furious Radford (7-4, 1-2) comeback attempt to upend the Highlanders.
Melissa Register cut Radford's deficit to 2-1 just before the half, banging home a rebound with just 1:05 left on the clock.
That would be the only score of the night for the Highlanders as Bridgette Street kept Radford at bay, making a game-high 11 saves.
Nicole Morgan gave Appalachian State the early lead converting on a penalty corner off a feed from Jenn Heiss at 9:29.
A breakaway off a Mountaineer counterattack pushed ASU's lead to 2-0 at 32:20. Leslie Thomas was sent up the right and was soon joined by Brooklyn Shearer, who took a slip just as RU keeper
Jennifer Wisniewski came out to play the ball and tucked it into the wide-open cage.
Those were the only two shots of the half for the Mountaineers. For the game, Radford held a decisive advantage in shots (18-5) and corners (13-4). Junior
Madonna Wadolowski led all players with six shots.
The loss snapped the Highlanders' nine-game winning streak against the Mountaineers, who last defeated Radford, 2-1 in overtime, at the 2004 NorPac Tournament in Davidson, N.C. It also ended a 12-game regular season winning streak, dating back to 2003.
Radford returns home next Friday to face these same Mountaineers at 6:30 pm.
