ROCK HILL, S.C. – Led by
Jade Okamoto (Huntington Beach, Calif. / Marina) and
Hannah Coles' (Birmingham, England / The Coleshill School) Top-3 finishes, the Radford women's golf team captured the 2010 Winthrop Invitational title at Rock Hill Country Club Sunday.
“Today's victory is a tremendous accomplishment for the Radford women's golf program,” said third-year head coach
Jeff Beeler. “I'm extremely proud of the girls and their attitudes heading into today's final round, which presented tough conditions.”
The Highlanders, who entered the final round with a four stroke advantage, carded a 309 this afternoon to finish the 36-hole event at 610, five swings clear of second-place Wofford (310-305 = 615).
Okamoto, who shared the overnight lead with Gardner-Webb's Sammy Vass, shot a five-over 77 to finish alone in second, one ahead of Coles, who recorded her second straight top-five finish with a two-day total of 151 (75-76).
Freshmen
Kirsty Condon (Lincolnshire, England / Kesteven and Sleaford) and
Paige Reese (South Hill, Va. / Park View) also placed inside the Top-10 for Radford, finishing tied for sixth (77-77 = 154) and 10th (76-79 = 155), respectively. For Reese, it was her third top-20 showing in as many tournaments.
Through three events this fall, the Highlanders have finished in 6th, 2nd and 1st place.
“We feel in order for us to accomplish our goal of winning the Big South Championship, we need to pick up some wins along the way,” Beeler commented.
The Terriers' Anne Marie Covar (74-69 = 143) fired the tournament's only sub-par round to claim the individual title.
Radford will enjoy an eight-day break before returning to the course at the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate hosted by East Carolina Oct. 11-12 in Greenville, N.C.
